Sounds like you're on the right track. Overdrive would be perfect. Did you check out the link I gave you? If you DIY, you can get a very very good sounding pedal for about 65 bucks.

It's actually quite easy to do, but if you don't feel like going for it then I would second Sparticus's suggestion of the Barber Direct.
