Effects/Amp Advice

Question:
Greetings,
First off...am a percussionist by training so have a ways to go on guitar, but I have a question for anyone willing to answer it...
I play a lot of rhythm, acoustic at camps, worship services etc. I have that pretty much down. I am looking at expanding my horizons and I got out my old electric guitar and I purchased an amp (Fender Tonemaster...buzzes a little, but not bad) and a pre-amp (Behringer x-vamp...has a lot of amp sims and effects). I want to work on some lead guitar and some ska stuff etc...music ranging from some of Third Days rockier stuff to Switchfoots tunes. My problem is that being a newbie to the effects/amps world, I haven't a clue as to what different musicians are utilizing. Oh sure I could use trial and error, but could anyone point me to a resource that says what amps and effects are being used on particular songs?
Answer:
For the most part any amp can be used for any song because it's all about how you set the amp. I'll finish my thought later I gotta go for now.

I wouldn't bother yourself with trying find the exact sound you get on the recordings. Try messing with different amp sims on your processor, and EQ it a bit. Then start experimenting, and finding out what sounds you like best.

What are some of the more popular amps/effects being used in CCM today?
Answer:
If you want to know what a specific effect is on a particular song, ask about it. We are a very helpful bunch.
That said, a whole wide variety of effects are used. It depends on the band on which particular effects are used.

+1
the generic list would be
wah, chorus, delay, overdrive/distortion as the four/five most common (imo)
Answer:
Yeah definitely overdrive and distortion are very popular. Whether amp or pedal is up to you, and I know theres die-hard fans of both on this site. Also, delay and chorus are pretty common. Also, Musician's friend has some nice samples of different effects on their site, so go their and listen to different pedals to get a feel for different effects.
Answer:
My self I use a tube amp and like the amp's distortion(or the tubes being overdriven) and use a dist/overdrive in front of that when I want a little harder tone. Now with solidstate amps distortion being run on top of the amps dist isn't alway the best thing to do. Like I said for finding the right amp just try out every amp you can. But if you want more than one amp tone your best bet is prob the Line 6: POD(I can't think of the newest model), I think Line 6 has the best amp simulation. As for effect like said before Wah, Od/dist, chorus and delay. Some other efx you might try are flange, Phaser and the Dunlop Rotovibe.
