(Now That You're Near kinda feel) It all really comes down to personal opinion. You should try both pedals extensively, and buy whichever one sounds better to you. I would personally endorse the Tubescreamer. However, there are 3 or 4 tubescreamer models, which one have you heard? And what amp do you have? -Nick Answer: Haha. RAWR. I'd would try both pedals with your amp/guitar at the store..And you decide. Answer: well at home i use a fender frontman series II something . . . but the pedal i would expect to use at church the most for my youth band, which is a peavey amp not quite sure what it is actually. but am i right when i say that they are very similar or no? Well, they're similar in the fact that they're both supposed to sound like overdriven tube amps. neither is meant for mega-gain, just a nice smooth sound. The tubescreamer really excells when placed in front of a tube amp to give it some more edge. -Nick Answer: The Boss SD-1 is basically Boss's answer for the Ibanez Tubescreamer. There are differences, but the similarities vastly outnumber the differences. That being said, the SD-1 has a bit more of a flatter EQ than the Tubescreamer. Lots of people talk about the "mid-hump" in the TS, but that's more because of underpronounced bass and treble, which then makes the mids stand out. THAT being said, the Tubescreamer OR the SD-1 can help get you the United type of tone. My personal preference is the SD-1 as the overdrive of it just sounds a bit crunchier and more "useful" in rhythm playing as opposed to the Tubescreamer. The SD-1 isn't a bad pedal for $40 at all. Answer: Well. They are very smillar. But I think the SD-1 might sound better, only because the tubescreamer is suposed to be ontop of a tube amp that already has overdrive. Answer: Wait it is the SD-1, right? You just said overdrive, which could be one of several pedals, but yeah, I guess you meant SD-1. In my opinion, SD-1 is better than the tubescreamer, because the tubescreamer is designed to go in front of an overdriven tube amp. Play both of them, though, and decide for yourself. Answer: so basically what you are all saying is that if i don't have a tubescreamer amp i should invest in the Boss overdrive. right?? if i want that unitec live sound. Answer: The Ibanez Tubescreamer is designed (optimally) to be placed out in front of a tube amplifier - it's an overdrive that's not too overbearing and (IMO) some models have a certain harmonic sweetness to them - I like the TS-9 myself, and some of the more "vintage" players swear by the TS-808 (to the point that they'll pay $300+ for one). I use a Boss BD-2 "Blues Driver" pedal on a regular basis. It's not foolproof (you can get bad tones with it if you try...), but I've enjoyed playing with mine. It's a bit crunchier than the Ibanez.
