Welcome to www.thanktoday.com !!!

what is that effect??

Question:
ok. well i went to a retreat and we played a bunch of slow songs, and the leader used some kind of effect that made the slow songs sound more wavy. i was guessing its a flange effect but wah-wah came into mind. hence its name. can you experts tell me what effect that is? sorry for the vague definition.
Answer:
Wavy? If you have a delay pedal, turn it on, play a note(s) and twist the knobs around.
But, if you say it sounds like a flanger or wah, then it might be either those, a phaser, or a chorus with the speed and depth knobs turned up high. Listen to the song "Come As You Are" by Nirvana and tell me if that's what it sounds like. OK? OK.
BTW, you can listen to song at Launch.

Your use of the word "wavy" makes me think maybe it's tremolo...?
Matt's right though, it might be phaser / chorus with the settings up high.

Answer:
i was thinking chorus...but wavy could mean a few things...still chorus was the first think to come to mind

That's more of a stuttery sound. I'm thinking it was something along the lines of a phaser. They're quit common in worship songs.
Answer:
yep. either a Chorus, Phaser, or Flanger...or even a Rotosphere
But really hard to say...gotta be a little more descriptive because lots of effects can be made to sound wavy. If the praise leader was using it throughout a song, I'd say it's a chorus.....(well, I would hope SO!!!). Otherwise, it would be so distracting and obnoxious that you probably wouldn't appreciate the effect so much.

You're right, it's probably some sort of chorus / phaser. Maybe even a rotosphere kind of thing.

Answer:
possibly a univibe? or a vibrato? de-tune? auto-wah?
Almost any effect can make sounds that will "wavy" according to some people. This is like saying... "I saw this car driving down the road the other day. I think it was red. can you tell me what it was?"
Answer:
I'd probably say chorus (though the mention of a wah pedal first brought to mind a phase shifter...), though tremolo would eb a possiblity also (doesn't have to be stuttery, turn the intensity down).
Answer:
I can get the trem. on my amp to make stutters and warbles and wavy.
Let's do this.
Phaser is an oscillating sound. Eddie Van Halen used tons of this stuff.
Chorus can be liquidy, or chimey, and can make a six string sound like a 12 string, depending on what settings you are using. Kurt Cobain used this on almost all of Nirvana's songs.
Flanging... the best description I've heard of it is a mix of chorus and phase.
Tremelo is a fluxuation of volume.
Wah makes a "wah" sound. Go figure. Auto wah is a wah, except that you don't have to move your foot on the pedal.
Vibrato makes a vibrato effect that changes the pitch. I don't know what the point of these are.
Rotosphere is... something.

My first thought of "wavy" is a chorus, but when you say it reminded you of more of wah-wah, I'm thinking a phaser.

Yeah, I'd have to agree based on the description that he gave. The bassist for the youth band uses his wah a lot for a phaser effect, and I've never seen someone enjoy the use of an effect as much as him.

haha... well this has pretty much been said, but it sounds like either chorus, tremelo, or phaser. Dude save us some effort and ask him, will you? Now we all are dying to know what it was.
