attaching a guitar strap

Question:
I've been playing guitar for less than a year. I have a Takamine- I so far only have opportunity to play at home and don't need a strap. But someone gave me one and I don't know how to attach it. There's a knob on the end of the guitar body, but none at the top under the fretboard. What do I need to buy, and will I need to drill a hole to install?
Hope someone wi/experience can help!

Well... the classic thing to do is to find a piece of string/thin rope about 12" long and tie it through the hole on the strap and around the end of the neck.
However, I don't like the way that looks, or the way it feels, so on my acoustic, I drilled my own hole and put in my own strap button. The back of the neck where it attaches to the body is a good place to put it. Just make sure it's thick enough for the entire screw to go in without going into the body... it needs to be in solid wood.
Answer:
Most straps manufactured today have holes drilled at both ends of the strap. I have a Takamine with the same configuration. Many straps also come with a small length of cord that you can tie around the headstock of your Takamine from that end of the strap. I purchased a small leather strap made by Martin that you can tie the cord to and attach it using the buttons on this little strap. It is a lot more attactive and easier to use than the cord by itself and it won't wear into the headstock of your guitar since it is wider and softer than the cord.

I reccomend either drilling a hole yourself or going to a guitar shop and getting it done there if you are nervous.

yeah thats a good idea. if you don't already know, you'll have to buy the little button thing, not just drill a hole.

My friend had this done on her acoustic bass. Easy as pie, didn't cost much either.

I've been wanting to do that to my 12-string for a while now too. That way I can use it at youth group to lead on sometimes, as opposed to always being electric. Geez, GAS really really sucks.
