so what about the D E L A Y effect?

Question:
hmm delay, okay so...the sound comes out a bit after you actually play it..? i dont really know much about effects..such as the difference between distortion and overdrive. but delay is the weirdest..imean why would you want an effect that lags the sound? iono can anyone explain it in any practical way? better yet, if anyone can post up a sample of the delay effect in good use, that'd be awesome. but yeah. D E L AY...their HECKA EXPENSIVE too.
Answer:
check out the thread on the deluxe memory man in this forum. Someone even put up sound clips of what delay sounds like on their Line 6 Echo Park. THe guy uses it very well.
Answer:
Oh, and also....go to your local music store to check out the effects. You can read about them all you want but hearing what they sound like makes HUGE difference.
Also, musician's friend.com has tons of music clips to demo lots of pedals you may be interested in.
Answer:
Delay is probably easier understood as an echo effect. It makes the sound repeat over and over to get a echo-y sound. Some people use them in idfferent ways to get even stranger sounds, but it's usually used for echoes.

Hey, thanks.
Like Rainer said, the delay is actually an echo. Most delays have controls for the volume of the repeats, how many repeats, and how fast the repeats occur.

It basically creates an ambient "echos in a large room" kind of feel that can be awesome in certain settings and stink in other settings.
Also, they don't have to be "HECKA EXPENSIVE". My first delay, the Danelectro Dan-Echo is one of the best "bang for the buck" delays out there in the budget delay category (in my opinion). It sounds incredibly warm and analog-ish as opposed to the brittle sound that digital delays can sometimes give. You can usually score them for less than $50 used. The Boss DD-3 is also a great alternative, although it tends to cost a little more.

On hte subject of cheap delays, my first was the Dano PB&J (the mini-delay) very simple to set up...no tap tempo or anything...my second delay was a Digitech XDD...which i traded for a BOSS DD-5...needless to say, regardless how many pricier delays i get, that PB&J is still one of the best out there...just not as versatile and possibly not as sturdy as the rest.

While it's true there are affordable delays, many delays are quite spendy... haha, I can picture him browsing musiciansfriend with his eyes growing larger and larger as the pedals get into the 200+ range...
I would personally check out the Line 6 Echo Park. 150 bucks, so it's not one of the cheaper ones, but it's also not the most expensive. Like albuht said, I posted some sound clips I recorded with it in the "Electro Harmonix Memory Man" thread, so have a look at that if you're interested.
