Replacement Speaker
Question: I have a Peavey Classic 30 with one of Major Tom's attenuators, and I am reasonably happy with the tone I am getting out of it. However, it seems a little bit too mid-heavy / trebly for me when I'm playing at higher volumes. So I am thinking of replacing the speaker with a Celeston Vintage 30. Do you all think this would be a good use of money? I'm sort of in between getting the Celeston or looking into a new amp, but for right now I think that my Peavey will serve me well, and I could always swap out the speaker into something else. Is it a good use of money? And, how much better will a Vintage 30 sound versus my Peavey Blue Marvel? (I've played it a good 6 months, so the Blue Marvel is broken in...) Answer: celestion vintage 30s are supposed to be one of the best mass-produced 12" speakers on the market. Answer: Hopefully someone who has changed out the stock speaker in the C30 will speak up - I have heard that the stock C30 speaker is on the thin side, a replacement speaker seems to be a common "mod". A V-30 should fit the bill, its has a rep as being a great 1x12 combo speaker. I have a Mojotone clone of a V-30, it sounds great in the 1x12 combo, lots of bottom end, very balanced - sounds BIG in a 1x12. Another one that I do have that sounds great for a 1x12 is a Webber ceramic Blue Dog, similar to the V 30, efficient and big sounding. I got mine slightly used on ebay, they are $90. new from Webber last time I checked, cheaper than the Celestion. The only down side to either of these is that they are louder per watt that what you have now. Of course, you do have the attenuator. Answer: I've replaced the stock speaker in my Peavey Ultra 112 (its 60watts instead of 30) with a Celestion G75 (or something like that) It sounded way better than the stock sheffield speaker and had much better bass response and evenend out the tone. If you can, take your stock speaker and put it in a closed back cabinet, I found that helped the sound. Goodluck. Celestion speakers are awesome for replacing stock stuff. Answer: have you considered JBL's D-120's (early 1970's vintage-12")? they are expensive though. another less mentioned is the 'Warrior" by Madison but i believe like Major Tom the Webber ceramic Blue Dog is a great speaker. u just have to be careful with the voice coil and cone's when buying used.
