worth it? I think so

Question:
Hi
Im gonna be buying a tube amp. Is it worth selling my me50 and going to single stomp boxes now I wont need all the distortions and getting a crybaby? I think it would be wouldnt it? The amp has got an effects loop (switchable) so stomp boxes would be better wouldnt they?
Answer:
Several things.
First, I would say that getting a tube amp is worth selling all the effects, as it will make your tone 10 times better alone. I also recommend sigle stomp effects because, while they are more spendy and take more space, they also sound a lot better (at least when comparing pedals of similar value).
One other thing just to give you a bit more knowledge, the efx loops are generally used only for the efx that are based on a timing system (chorus, delay, flange, etc.) I don't know the specifics, but I do know that it sounds better that way.
I also wouldn't recommend a crybaby wah, but thats just personal opinion.
Answer:
I'm with PM on this one.
Answer:
How bad will it sound if you don't use an effects loop? Because my amp doesn't have one.

Well...The Edge doesn't use any effects loops, everything is straight into the PODs or one of three AC30s...might give you an idea...

But does he use amp distortion or a stomp box? Because I've heard that sticking a delay and distortion or overdrive through the same input sounds crappy. Same with flange, chorus, ect.
Answer:
It really isn't that big of a deal. Yes it makes a difference, but not even close to being so much that it can ruin your sound. For a while I used all my pedals (including delay and an OD/Distortion pedal) all going into the main input. When I moved the delay to the efx loop it sounded better to me, but before it was still sounded very good.

Edge uses pedals for distortion. An Ibanez TS-9, actually. Heres what Dallas Schoo (Edge's guitar technician) had to say..."that's another distortion box. it's a soft distortion he has it set for, but that is in probably 70 percent of his presets of the crunch songs. not like "where the streets have no name," or the pure delay songs. but the big songs, "beautiful day" and "fly." "
For any U2 effect losers like myself, check these interviews out...http://www.swaggerandstyle.com/dallas/audio.htm . Even if you just like effects, watch the videos. They're amazing..it has Dallas Schoo explaining what a typical show for him is like, and talking about the Edge's setup.
Answer:
I see. Thanks PianoMan.
Fendstratplaya, that setup is HUGE. His guitar tech. probably works ten times more than The Edge... wow.
Answer:
Fendstratplaya, if I would post those vids in the U2 section of this site, those are AWESOME, any strong U2 fan would love to see those.
Out of curiosity, dnl88, what amp are you getting?

...and a Big Muff, and a Boss OD-2 and SD-1, and a Sobbat, and an Ampeg Scrambler, and a Fuzz Face (for the 747 sound), and the Manny's Fuzz, and the Rabb fuzz, and...(think that's all of his last rigs drive/fuzz pedals)
and for the upcoming tour, he's using two custom Line 6 Distortion Pro's (the DM-4 in a rack).
There is also one Vox (or just the head section and a load box) set up for a direct line (the "Vox in a box").

vox is good. personally i think crybaby's are the best. If you can find a budda wah, get that, they are the best wah pedals on the market.
