VST instruments

Question:
what are VST instruments, and how do i use them?
Answer:
VST instruments are virtual instruments what are generally played through MIDI signals. To use them, you need a VST host with support for MIDI sequencing (which is mostly all of the nice ones nowadays), and you sequence the MIDI in your tune, apply the VSTi to the track, then there you have it. There are also other ways. What you can also think of them as is a patch on an electronic keyboard. There are thankfully a very nice variety of free ones out on the web. I haven't found a half-decent piano yet, though...
Answer:
The key difference between a VST effect and a VSTi is that a VSTi generates sound based off a digital signal (midi data) where a vst effect just changes existing sound.
Answer:
i see... i've got a piano with midi capabilities, some midi cables, and some roland VST instruments... what do i need to do to hook up everything up and activate the instrumets on my recording program (i use cubase)
Answer:
You need a way to interface the keyboard into the computer, and you need a VST compatible Host software program. Some newer Keyboards have a USB connection and drivers for midi connection without a separate interface. If yours doesn't then you will have to purchase something. There are midi to usb interfaces available for as low as $40 or less. You can spend more, and buy something that will also let you plug a mic or guitar in too.Once you have the keyboard connected you will have to configure everything to talk to each other. It would be hard to advise you any further until you have purchased something specific.
Answer:
yeah... i have a lexington omega interface, and i'm pretty sure i have all the ports on my keyboard and interface, i just need to know how to configure everything.
