The pre-amp is the section of the amp circuit that "colors" the sound before amplification. So the knobs that control bass, mids, treble, and whatever else, are part of the pre-amp section. After the pre-amp colors the sound from the guitar, it enters the power-amp section, where the sound is amplified, and leaves the speakers, filling the room with glorious music!
For the most part, you have an understanding of the other terms. Amp head on cab. Guitar plugs into head. Head colors sound, amplifies it, and sends it to the cab, where the sound is projected through the speakers.
Answer:
An amplifier has two stages, a pre-amplifier and a power amplifier. The preamp shapes the tone, and boosts the guitar signal for the power amp. The power amp drives the sound into the speakers with the appropriate amount of amplification.
An amp head is the preamp and power amp in one unit.
