quick demo using GarageBand, for Soapbar II and others...
Question: Inspired by Soapbar's thread about "sssshhhhh" in recording, I decided to create a quick demo using Apple's GarageBand 2 in order to see if I could create my own "sssshhhhhh" sounds. The signal chain is as follows: Godin Solidac, stock Monster Prolink Performer 500 monster rock cable Furman PB40 patch bay Radio Shack 1/4" to RCA adapters some generic stereo RCA to RCA cable Emagic AudioWerk 2 PCI soundcard PowerMac G4 Quicksilver Apple GarageBand 2 (using it's own amp models, loops and effects) I recorded 2 guitars; one clean w/ chorus and echo and one with an overdrive. Drums and bass are from the Apple loops collection. Overall, it sounds pretty clean to me. I've got no way to adjust the input level on the soundcard so it is what it is. Any gain has to come post-recording via the individual channel level control. The ONLY thing that I found that could contribute to a "sssshhhhh" sound is leaving the guitar channel's input set to record enable when monitoring. My guess is that if "sssshhhh" sounds are occuring on Soapbar's recordings, they may be coming from external sources unless he's got an internal gain (that I don't have) adjusted incorrectly. Answer: I may have overadjusted my mic gain on my mixer. If I get a chance to record again tonight i'll try fixing/adjusting following: Distance from amp/mic when recording Mic gain Any computer gain sources By the way, thats an incredible amp sound. I cant seem to find any amp models on garageband that dont just sound like PSSSHHHHH!!!!!!! Answer: It's the Classic Rock sim with just a little more echo and reverb than default.
