What is this effect?
Question: Been playing the "name that effect" game and I've been unsuccessful so far: On the Michael W. Smith version of "The Wonderful Cross" (it's on one of the "Worship" albums, but I can't remember which one), I'm trying to figure out what effect is being used for the guitar fills being played especially during the first couple of verses. It oscillates like a wah, but it has far more of a synth sound to it than a normal wah. It reminds me (but is not exactly the same) as the Edge's tone in "Mysterious Ways" (which I know is an autowah preset on one of the Korg multi-effect rack units). If anyone knows what this particular effect (I'd really like to know the specific pedal/rack unit, if possible), we are possibly doing that song for Easter, and I would love to use it then and in the future on other stuff. Answer: Don't have the cd... but I just gave the preview a quick listen on iTunes. Sounds like a couple of effects actually. A Uni-Vibe & Wah. The worble is coming from the Uni-Vibe. It could be a Wah or Envelope Filter for the band pass effect. I've done this before (on this song actually) with a wah in order to keep a little more control and keep a cap on the upper range. As for the actual gear used on the recording, no idea... but I know Paul Moak has been doing some work for him the last year or so. Here is an 3 year old artical interviewing Paul who runs through his gear (at the time) Oh... and I thought the "Mysterious Ways" effect was his Lovetone Meatball... but I could be wrong. Answer: Thanks for the info, I'm going to check out the article. Off-topic: As for the "Mysterious Ways," the guys at u2sound-forum.com (who usually are pretty authoritative, I think one of the mods knows Paul Dallas, the Edge's tech, pretty well) all seem to think it is the "Funkwah" setting on the Korg A3. Thanks for the link to the Lovetone pedal though, I have heard about it before but haven't listened to it before. Looks pretty cool! Answer: Glenn Pearce played on both Worship CD's. He has a Sweetsound Mojovibe on his board that he used quite a bit on both CD's. I agree, on "The Wonderful Cross", it's most likely the Mojovibe and a wah. Glenn's a very underrated player in my opinion. His use of effects is very tasteful. Keith BTW, he mentions U2 and Edge as influences on his playing/style . Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
