Stomp Boxes 101
Question: Ya so ive had an rp200 for a long time and Im definately ready to go spend some money on a chain of stompboxes. Now ive had my eyes on the ProCo Turbo Rat, the VooDoo Labs Sparkle Drive, and the Boss DD-20. But i just need some advice on how to get a good sound out of this chain, and any chain for that matter. Ive heard that i need an overdrive to "fatten" the sound at the beginning of the chain, like a tube screamer or something. But ya im just new at it and would love some advice. any help is very appreciated! thanks. Rob Answer: What guitar and amp do you have? Answer: I have a Schecter C-1 Elite and a 50 watt Peavey Valve King 112. Answer: Originally Posted by SoapbarII What guitar and amp do you have? Answer: Don't forget a tuner and an EQ pedal will help a lot with "fattening" up your tone. Then, there's a volume pedal, blah, blah, blah... Why not just get a Digitech GNX3000, POD XTL, Boss GT-8 or something similar? It will sound good in your setup. BTW Ryan, congratulations on hitting 5,000 posts! Don't you have anything better to do? Answer: Psh, that tests easy! Answer: You've picked some good choices in what you're eyeing... but I wouldn't ditch the rp200 quite yet. I'm sure if you've been using it for years that you were able to get a few sounds out of it that you like. It may be good to hold onto for the tuner, volume pedal and clean modulated patches. I would set up your chain as such... Sparkle Drive... Rat... rp200... DD-20 Answer: Try actually buying the pedals first, then figuring out how to make them work best together. Doing it beforehand is a bit overanticipatory, IMO. And 5,000 posts is nothing. Answer: Originally Posted by Rainer. He did ask opinions on how to get a good sound out of this chain I'm working my way all the way up to 50 on this forum. I'm new here, but I've been on a few other forums and feel I have a pretty good grasp on things in general Answer: Originally Posted by BiggSteve777 He did ask opinions on how to get a good sound out of this chain Yeah...getting help in the effects forum can be like pulling teeth some times... To the OP: Great, tasteful rig there. I've not had much experience with the DD-20, (not a big fan of modeling delays) but it'll get you a lot of versatility, and has a greater reputation for reliability than the DL-4, it's closest competitor. The RAT is always a classic, and I'm a big fan of the Sparkle Drive (the parallel clean boost helps soften the nasty mid-hump that comes from the Tube Screamer-esque OD circuit). Since you're getting the Turbo RAT (louder, less distorted) I would put the Sparkle Drive first. Set for a semi-clean boost, it would help your rat get more distorted and add some mids. Good for a rhythm/lead switching sound. Then, DD-20 at the end of the chain, or in your effects loop if you like. Answer: Originally Posted by Griffon Yeah...getting help in the effects forum can be like pulling teeth some times... Well, we can talk about a conjectured rig all we want, but in the end, when he actually gets the gear and tries it out, that's when he'll really figure out what more he wants to do with it. There's honestly no way to tell precisely how he will like those pedals with his guitar and his amp and his technique until he actually has the stuff in hand. It's sort of like asking what mods you should do to a certain guitar before you've actually played it. If you don't know how you personally like it, why figure out what you want to change? Answer: True, but you can still answer his question. The way I described will get him a good sound. Will it be the sound he wants? Maybe, maybe no, but it will give him a good starting point when he buys the pedal. I figure, answer the poster's question first. Then if you really feel the need, go on and spread your wisdom. It's a whole lot more helpful than the millions of replies I've read that say "you don't want a distortion pedal, you need a new amp". Thanks, but that doesn't answer the original question at all. Sorry, it's just a major pet peeve of mine around here.... Answer: Yeah, we all have our pet peeves. Forgive me for foregoing the question a bit. I think those pedals with that amp alone is plenty for good tone, not much more required there. Answer: Originally Posted by Rainer. Yeah, we all have our pet peeves. He wasn't asking "can I get a good tone" it was a "how can I get a good tone" Griffon... I think you're spot on with your reply. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
