a couple questions about effects

Question:
What do you guys think about combining distortion/OD effects? will it damage the amp in anyway?
Also, techniques on combining 2+ delay pedals anyone have any history here with them?
Answer:
Combining OD's and distortions is going to most likely result in mush. As for delay, no problems. As long as there is a clear difference between the delay settings, you can acheive some interesting results. Try one slap-back style with an immediate repeat to thicken the tone, and a more edgelike analog delay. Sounds cool.

I get a pretty good combined tone with the J side of my J&H with the H side, the DS-1 and the Dano Fabtone, because the Jekyll is set at a low gain and largely boosting the signal.
Answer:
That is not true, is called stacking and lots of guitarist stack there drive pedals for great results.
Answer:
The only way I like most overdrive and distortion is combined with another drive pedal. My favorite is an Ibanez TS9 in front of a Boss BD2. They're both set to be pretty low gain by themselves, but combined I get a very rich sound that doesn't get muddy like a single overdrive with lots of gain. The flatter sounding BD2 also seems to help smooth out the peakyness of the TS9.
Even the lowly Boss DS1 really opens up when stacked with another overdrive.
I use two delays occasionally, usually one set to a dotted 8th tap, and one set to a quarter note tap. Not all the time though, usually one or the other, but with certain delay sounds the combination can really fill out the sound of a simple part.
Answer:
Using an OD and distortion pedal together is a common practice. I use my Tonebone for my OD and my Blues Driver as my distortion, as much as that does not make sense. For years, I had it the other way around, but recently, I tried it out this way and it works great. Go figure...
Answer:
Sorry, originally posted at 2am. Absolutely agree about stacking od and distortion, but the gain involved with each stomp needs to be quite low otherwise, "mush".

I don't know about "mush" but volume can get out of control quickly. I set all of my gain pedals' volume just above unity gain (slightly louder than a clean signal) In the past I've run a Fat Boost... into a LovePedal Eternity... into a TS9... into a Damoaf. I used every combination of them and every combination sounded fantastic. Ocasionally I used all four at the same time.
I do use all analog gain pedals... I'm not sure if that helps prevent the "mush"
Answer:
Stacking gain pedals can give a good amount of versatility on a distorted sound, by varying the gain and level of each pedal.
As far as mush, clipping is clipping, too much clipping will eventually just get you a square wave, and while there's not too much definition in that, it's a useful sound every now and then.

I disagree 100%....I run a FUZZbrite into a heavily modified Big Muff Pi and the sound is anything but mush. Both are set to high levels of gain. I also used to run a FabTone into my Muff, which can't be set for anything like low gain. Sounded excellent.
As for stacked delays, the most common use is short delays into long delays or vice versa. Two long delays can also be used for polyrythmic sounds, but this can be hard (though not impossible) to use in a live context with a full band.
Answer:
Ohhh... I missed the part about the delays
I use tap tempos w/ shorter delay first. I usually have them set up...
  • Dotted Eighth --> Quarter (more natural sounding than "multitap")
But have occasionally gone...
  • Dotted Eighth --> Half (tap half notes instead of quarter)
  • Dotted Eighth --> Half reverse
  • Dotted Eighth --> Whole reverse
  • Quarter --> Half reverse
  • Quarter --> Whole reverse
