Question:
I bought a new amp the other day and I'm waiting on it to come in the mail. I'm about to go nuts here!!! Hopefully it will be here in the next couple days. Anyway, it is a Crate V3112T. 30 watt tube combo with a Tone tubby 12" speaker. I have the smaller version V58 5 watt combo with an 8" speaker. I liked the tone, but I wanted a little more clean headroom and reverb! The crazy thing is, I have never even played this model. I bought the V5 on a whim. I wanted a small tube amp to see if tubes were for me. Since I had it, I pretty much quit playing my much larger SS amps. The tone on that thing was awesome. Hopefully the V30 will come through for me in the same way! Just thought I would share my frustration! Here is a link for the amp if you were wondering.

Looks like a nice amp. 30 watts will definetly give you a lot more headroom. I have a 40 watt tube amp, and it gets VERY LOUD.

Actually I sold all my other amps to fund this buy. My last amp, the V5, went about a month ago. I was ready to buy then, but something came up that was a little more important. Anyway, I just got the money I needed up to make the purchase. So, while I am amp-less I have been using the little Drive amp that I bought my daughter last year. While it is good for her to noodle around on, the tone coming out of it drive me crazy. I can't wait to put it back in her room so I don't have to hear it SO much!!! When she starts playing more, I know it will be replaced quickly!

Read this article put out by one of the UK's premier SS amp manufacturers. The general summary is that SS amps are quieter because major manufacturers (Fender, Marshall, etc.) use cheap components that make them less efficient. Your speaker's sensitivity has alot to do with volume, and often SS amps have lower sensitivity speakers which reduces their perceived volume.

i've been told that is the general rule. i've heard that 40W of Tube is equal to 100W SS. or maybe it was 60W tube... don't quote me on that. the point being that
tube watage equals more volume than the same amount of SS watage.
