What order should I put them in?
Question: I've got the following pedals: Morley Bad Horsie II Wah Boss Flanger of some sort Boss Super Overdrive Boss Stereo Chorus Ernie Ball Stereo Volume/Pan I'm also looking at getting a Boss DD-5 or 6 and a compressor of some sort. What order would you guys put these in? Answer: Generally, these effects would go: Wah, Overdrive, Flanger, Chorus, Volume, Delay. However, you will prbably want to put the delay in the FX loop, along with maybe the chorus and flanger. If you want your volume to be a gain control, put it at the beginning of the chain, if you want it to be a volume control, put it at the end before the amp, or in the FX loop before the delay. If you get the compressor, i think generally you want it pre-wah... it's been a while since i've used a compressor, but i have a BH-II so I can investigate where it sounds better if you'd like... I'm just thinking that post-wah might cancel out the wah effect slightly. (which i suppose might be desireable). Answer: Distortions and Overdrives MUST go 1st(or after wah) otherwise the sound is horrible...I had to figure that out on my own. My OD is after my delay, it sounds a lot better. It still sounds pretty bad, though. Answer: OKay new plan. I'm also getting a noise filter thingy. So what order do I want? I'm thinking: Compressor -> Wah -> OD -> Volume -> Noise Filter -> My Amp -> Effects Loop Send -> Flanger -> Chorus -> Effects Loop Return How would you guys change that, if any? I need to buy a pedal board. Hmm... Answer: Originally Posted by SoapbarII Distortions and Overdrives MUST go 1st(or after wah) otherwise the sound is horrible...I had to figure that out on my own. NEVER say MUST when you're talking about any aspect of a form of art. Overdrive after Delay can be a very cool sound sometimes. Also, if you're using light modulation effects on your clean tone, and are too lazy or poor to get some sort footswitchable fx loop, you can put a heavy fuzz at the end to sort of drown everything out. Of course this is only applicable in genres of music where you commonly switch between lush clean tones and heavy fuzz. With lighter OD, it's interesting to experiment with phaser placement. And if you've got an autowah (or other envelope triggered effects), that might work best before the distortion... or if you've got the equipment to do it.. put the envelope tracer before the distortion and the VC effect after the distortion. Answer: My two cents.... do whatever you want. There's no set rules. Most people tend to put wahs early in chain and delays last. A friend of mine has his delay before his wah. I have delay in two different parts of my signal, first and last. Just do whatever you want. Experiment. Whichever sounds best for you or does whatever you're looking for, do it. Answer: So how about the noise filter in your opinion? closer to the amp, or the guitar, or within the effects loop? Answer: Originally Posted by maadio So how about the noise filter in your opinion? closer to the amp, or the guitar, or within the effects loop? What's creating the most noise? Is it a noise suppresor? It's basically just a gate put on your signal. When you don't play above a set amout of dB's, then it mutes the signal going through. But when it gets over that set dB, then it lets everything through. I'd say putting it after a delay or reverb might cut out some of your decay, so that's something to consider. These are just some of the things you gotta think of. Think of what the effect does to your signal and what kind of signal could be coming through that pedal at any point and how it would effect that signal, and everything can just come naturally. It's not like pedal order is an irreversible thing. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
