Change my Setup...

Question:
alright.
I have grown tired of my guitar/fx/amp setup. not really, but, wanted to get some opinions of changes to it. I will be keeping my guitars/amp/fx, and not buying new ones (well, one exception, later). Work with what you got. Points for getting me a better sound. I used to own pretty much many of the pedals you can name at one time or another, i probably whored it. Got rid of EVERYTHING besides my muff PI.
Sound:
Mostly rock 'n' roll worship, but interested in hardcore/metal/rock/etc..
Guitars:
Gibson SG
Gibson Gothic ES-135
Schecter 006 (dont play much, left in drop C for certain songs/fun)
Amp:
Marshall Valvestate 100R 2x12 + Marshall Valvestate 'class' 4x12 cab
current setting:
Clean:
Bass-7, mid-6, treble-8
OD 1:
Gain: 5
OD 2:
Bass-7, mid-6, treble-8, gain-6, contour- 9
FX loop on 10 (sounds better this way, even with nothing in the loop)
Power-dampner on
Pedals:
(all in FX loop, i know, im lazy)
Boss TU-2 --> nameless true bypass fx loop box (loop on, loop off) ---(in nameless loop)-> Sovtek big muff PI (ooold school)-->dunlop crybaby-->Line 6 DL-4.
I am looking for an overdrive perhaps to take my OD2 over the top. I love the marshall sound, but sometimes crave a little different distortion. This is where you come in.
It could be as easy as taking things in/out of the fx loop, or tweaking my EQs to get a better distortion or clean sound. I am all ears and will try it when you post it.
Thanks for the help, I could do some of this myself, but like I said, I am lazy and love commas. Also, I am just looking for some creative input from you creative guitar/fx guys on these boards.
Thanks in advance,

Answer:
Well, getting all but the time based fx out of the efx loop would likely make a good improvement. Other then that, I would say take some time and mess around with your EQ and see if you find something that you like even more.
Answer:
try Bass-4, mid-7.5, treble-9, gain-7.5, and contour from 7-10
I love those settings on my amp, though i personally don't have a contour control...

Try putting your Crybaby before your Big Muff.
Also, try(on the Big Muff) Volume-7, Tone-6, and Sustain from 6-9

And take your fx out of the loop! Its sounds better.

Just try these settings and see what comes of it. Especially putting the Crybaby before the Big Muff.

Yeah thats a good idea.
Answer:
You should try a Tube Screamer and/or a BOSS Super Overdrive. They will give you a distortion that your Marshall just isn't made to give you. The BOSS Blues Driver is sweet too.
As far as wanting a boost/more gain in your OD2 channel, you could try hooking up a compressor. I use mine as a pure level boost (high level, high attack, low sustain) for solo's and stuff.
More ideas keep comin, so I'm just throwin them out as they come. I have a pedal made by Snarling Dogs that is basically a tone switch. It adds a very cool growl and gives a new face to any other distortion. I never use it, but it also has a very light overdrive that's unlike anything else I've been able to get from an overdrive pedal. Its called the "Very Tone Dog"... but I'm not sure if they still make them anymore. You can check it out at: http://www.snarlingdogs.com/products/verytone.html
... I'm out of ideas for now... but I'll check back if I think of anything
Answer:
Is the Blues Driver that good? It seemed like the lower-priced Boss pedals aren't all that great. I purchased a DS-1 Distortion, and isn't very good. Its okay for distortion, but its horrible for anything less, um, distorted. It actually gets a decent fuzz sound for a dist. pedal.
Answer:
DS-1 is junk, imo, unless you like a blanket of noise. It just doesn't do anything besides definitionless distortion... no tone selection or variance. The other pedals I mentioned (Blues Driver, Super Overdrive and Tube Screamer) all have good tone variation and are much more versitile.
Answer:
Thanks guys,
I was actually looking at the Visual Sound Jeckyll and hyde...
Does everything the tubescreamer does, but better..

Awesome pedal. Very good pedal. Excellent pedal. Get it. Now. Before I buy all of them.
Answer:
If you really want to change your setup, I'd gladly take the SG off you hands.

I have decided after much reading on guitargeek.com forums to ditch some of my stuff.
First to go is the valvestate setup.
First thing on my list to get is a Marshall JCM 800 with an Avatar Cab (straight? slant?) with two Celestion G12H30's on the bottom and two Celestion V30's on top (www.avatarspeakers.com).
Adding to my pedalboard will be a Sustain Punch Creamy Dreamer, Boss CE-2 modded by indyguitarist (www.indyguitarist.com), a good (ehx black finger tube?) compressor and perhaps a phaser (small stone..)..
That should keep me happy! Now to sell this valvestate 6x12 stack..!
