GBX and Line out options??
Question: Hey all, I posted about my vintige Gibson SG, now here is a question about my vintage amp (GBX Bass driver head and cab) The cab is a 4:10" and it has its own power amp. The head is then most likely a preamp seciont as it has a power supply that plugs into the back of the cab, the cab then has a power supply that plugs into a electrical socket. I think the reason they powered the cab is because one head has 4 output jacks, alowing you to chain up to 4 bass cabs into one head and have each cab power itself seperatly, all taking the singnal from a single source...cool idea. So my question is this: Since the head is most likely just a preamp, can I use one of the other outputs as a line out to the board since it wont get powered by the cab? It might work, but what do you think about this? Is the head actually powred? Thanks, -Deren Answer: Yeah, sure, if it's just a preamp. Maybe even better yet: plug it into an all tube power amp . Answer: The back of the head says that it has 0.5watts 115volts and 60Hz, does any of this indicate a power amp section in the head. I really do wanna try this out and see if I can, it would save me a mic for micing the cab, although I relize that miccing the cab sounds better! any suggestions? Does anyone know anything about GBX? Thanks, -Deren Answer: Howdy; I see this thread is over a year old but perhaps I can shed some light on the situation. I have a GBX Bass Cab that has a solid state power amp installed on the rear back cover. What I did is take the back cover off, cut the pos and neg wires that come off the speaker wiring into the power amp. Then I took the power amp out and threw it in the garbage. I then took a normal 1/4" guitar chord and cut it in half. One half, I threw away. The other half, I spliced (using black tape) into the pos and neg wires that came off the speaker wiring inside the bass cab. If you want to do this properly, you could solder them right into the last speaker in the chain. Just follow the wiring in the cab, it is pretty self-explanatory. Voila! A passive, parallel-wired 4x10" cabinet. I'm currently using it powered by a Marshall 100w 8100 guitar head for guitar and the cab sounds great. My speakers are in great shape, it puts out mondo power and a great bottom end. If you want to learn more about how to wire this cab into a passive cabinet, I would suggest searching google for "Guitar cabinet schematics" and look for a standard 4x10 wired in parallel. Hope this helps! I'm not a christian but I wanted to post on this thread anyhow! Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
