Traynor YCV40T
Question: First off, I'd like to thank you guys for all the help you've given me thus far. I've pretty much settled on the Traynor YCV40T 2x12" for my gigging guitar amp, but there is one fly in the ointment. For some reason I find there isn't enough "ultra high" gain for playing mean solos, and I was wondering if anyone knows an affordable way to get a "sudo-satriani" sound out of this amp, or one like it. I'm not reffering to the delay and wah he uses, more of just that "so dirty it sounds clean" sound. Oh, and I talked my the worship leader at my church into letting me use an Amp on stage so I also would like to know if Maj. Tom makes attentuators for this amp. Answer: it's 40W so as long as their is a cable between the amp and the speaker the tom should work. as far as getting super high gain out of it...hmm...you'll probably have to get a pedal or something. i've been told that the traynor ycv's have a very fender-esque tone. Answer: As an owner of both a YCV40WR and of a Major Tom Attenuator, I can attest to the fact that they work wonderfully together. As for high-gain, I was talking to a luthier friend/mentor and he told me that his amp just broke down and he was seriously considering a YCV40. He told me that he also believes that they don't have enough gain, and that he would be hooking his Mesa Boogie preamp up to it to get that gain. From this, I gather that a high-gain preamp is likely the best solution. I am rather curious as to if there are any decent preamps that I might check out as well as I want more gain out of the amp. Answer: Yeh I hear that, I"m a high gain fanatic. Outside of a all tube high gain amp, to add gain to that sweet amp of yours try using a distortion pedal such as the jeckle and hyde marshall pedal. SInce your amp is all tube I think it's just going to be a kind of pre amp anyways... Coult be wrong... peace. Answer: I've been doing some research, and I was wondering what you guys thought of the EHX 12AX7EH pre-amp tubes. Do you think that going to High gain tubes would yield a signifigant improvement? Also speaking of an owner of a Jeckyll & Hyde pedal, I can also attest to the fact that it just doesn't do the job. Answer: I'll take your word on it PM, being a fellow tone fanatic myself Answer: hmm...i don't know how much of a difference there is from brand to brand on 12ax7 tubes. in general, i don't think that there will be a huge difference between the stock 12ax7 and any other brand in terms of gain.
