Different/weird Sound
Question: Ok, so here's the deal. I went from digital to analog. I can post my rig if needed but i've got all my basics covered (good overdrive/distortion..although I think i'm going to add a big muff for fuzz, delay needs are met, good chorus, etc...). What i'm missing are those 'weird sounds'. Everything that I've got sounds great. Like a good, analog rock setup should. But I want some 'different sounds' with which to add to certain pieces of music. By this i'm speaking of phaser, flanger, envelope filter, etc... I'm not a big flanger fan. I recorded a CD a few years ago with WAY too much flanger and haven't been a fan since. I've been looking at the MXR phaser as well as the EH Small stone. I've also looked at EH Dr Q. I know I'll probably get jumped on for trying to buy something when I don't quite no what I want. But that's the thing. I don't know what I want. I just want a different sound. A different effect that I can go do when delay/chorus/tremolo/wah doesn't cut it. Something I can play with volume swells with. I know what I want, I just don't know what it is. Suggestions? Right now I'm leaning towards the small stone or the dr q. -shane Answer: A Dr. Q could be cool for some funky sounds. You might check this out. Behringer cloned the BOSS Slow Gear I believe. The Guyatone SV-2 is also supposed to be a good replacement for the SG-1. (Just for reference, the SG-1 usually sells for $200+ on eBay) On the whole, EHX does offer alot of...well...weird pedals. You could go a step further and move out of traditional guitar effects completely with something like the Worm or the EHX Frequency Analyzer. There's definitely alot of options out on the market. I'm sure some others will add their own ideas to the mix. You can get some pretty interesting sounds from multiple delays, or from getting a self-oscillating delay in the mix. I've heard some pretty off the wall sounds come out of a Danelectro PB&J with a dying battery in it too, and there's a power supply unit out there that's supposed to simulate a dying battery (I can't remember who make sit). Answer: Get a phaser that cuts in and out, something like the MXR Phaser or the BOSS Chorus might be a good idea. I heard something like that on a good worship song. Just go to a guitar store and start messing around with the phasers and flangers and such. You might find something you've never heard of, you just have to go and expierence it. Answer: I had a dd5 that I was using and loving...until I got the Danecho. I love that thing, but I digress. So I set my DD5 to a really hard echo and just use it for weird noises with volume swells. I really liked it but wanted to see if there was something else out there that could kind of do that and free up my dd5 again. -shane Answer: Originally Posted by thesteve You might check this out. When does it come out if not? The site said it would go for about $45. I'm down with that. -shane Answer: Originally Posted by snizzle Man, this thing seems freakin awesome. Answer: How do you think the Behr will sound compared to the BOSS? Could you give me another comparison? (i.e. pedal A (original) to pedal B (knockoff pedal) ) Do you think it will be a decent pedal or a complete waste? Know when it's supposed to hit shelves? On a different note: I play mostly praise and worship and rock. Do you think the small stone or DR q would be a better fit? -shane Answer: Originally Posted by snizzle How do you think the Behr will sound compared to the BOSS? They have some pedals that are obvious clones of EHX pedals in addition to their BOSS clones At the price that I think the Behringer will come out at, it's practically a no-lose situation. It's supposed to hit shelves 2nd quarter 2007. Answer: Other options for the slow gear sound: -Guyatone SV2 Slow Volume -Build Your Own Clone Lazy Sprocket -DOD FX Swell Pedal -Line 6 DL4 (auto volume swell) -Line 6 Echo Park It's really nothing you can't replicate (mostly) with a volume pedal. I would look into some other modulation/filter effects, or even different delays. Answer: BOSS OC-2 and Digitech Whammy Will do weird sounds. A good, wide and fast chorus/vibrato can sound like plastic wrap, so will my modded Bassballs. EHX is constantly coming out with more and more weird pedals....check out the POG and the HOG and the Polyphase and the Flanger Hoax. A feedback loop can give you very weird sounds....and turn a bucket full of crappy effects into re-born noise makers. Anything by Mid-Fi is great, as are the Effector13 boxes. Metasonix has weird boxes, though they're aimed towards the synth market....and they're rather crude. Also, check out Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2. The sequenced and LFOed and envelope following capabilities can make for very creative noise making. Finally....get a guitar with a trem (like a bigsby, none of this Floyde Rose stuff), turn your amp up real loud, kick in a fuzz, and make the guitar sound like a whale or a porcupine or something.....I like those sounds the best personally.
