Question:
Can you guys tell me what's so great about the VOX AC30?
Answer:
the AC30 is a classic British tone. It's a unique hot biased amp (not actually Class A, but it's marketed that way). It's the amp behind both the Beatles and Queen.
I've always heard great things about their cleans...not so much that there was a tone of headroom, but just that it has a particular "chime" that people really seem to dig.
Answer:
The AC30 is one of the "signature sounds" in modern music - probably due a good bit to the fact that the Beatles used them. It's enough so that other amp makers have tried to get close to this tone with many of their own models.

I think it should be mentioned that Brian May of Queen heavily modified his AC30's. In MY OPINION** the quality of Vox has diminished incredibly in the past few years. The modern AC30 just doesn't stand up to a classic AC30 (again, my opinion.)
** This is my opinion, I am not stating this to be fact, this is based on my own personal experience.

One day I want to own two circa 75 Vox's. I want to do a May mod on one and leave the other stock (for ELO tones).
BTW. Vox's, especially the older ones, had a tonal character or flavor to them and that's what makes them unique. It's hard to define, but they have a special quality.

I'd be interesting in seeing if it's really a difference in circuit/circuit components or just one of speaker age and/or changes in cabinet manufacturing.

They do just plain sound good, at least as far as I and many, many other players are concerned.
Answer:
They are by far the best-sounding amps in the world. In my opinion. It's distortion is just a big loud roar, and it's cleans are the best ever too. That's also just my opinion.

The sound? It's one of the industry standards that has earned its place along side a number of other great amps.
