looking for a new amp... sorta...

Question:
well, lets see. backround info first i suppose. basically, parents buy me 65W fender amp for xmas, i like the sound, but way to loud for our church. dad says we could probably take the amp back and trade it in for one that suits my needs more, so i'm sorta lookin to see if there is the perfect amp out there. [/backround info]
ok, so it would need to be around 30W, have a great clean channel, a decent overdrive channel, and cost less than $300. probably more like $250. does such an item exist? i was sorta lookin at the valvetronix AD30 maybe. anyone know of anything else?

Honestly, you're not gonna notice a huge volume difference in 65 watts and 30 watts. It doesn't work that way. I'd say keep the fender, and turn it down... or buy an attenuator.
Answer:
If you want to go the route of the ADvt series, I'll say what I said in the other thread...
go with the AD50vt...I'd do this just to take the 12" speaker over the 10" speaker. The AD50vt has both a volume, gain, master volume and "wattage" control so you should be able to dial in a decent sound at a decent volume.
Answer:
Can't you just turn it down?
I know those Fenders have irritatingly sensitive knobs 1-3.
Answer:
yeah, but i turned it down as far as it could go still sounding good (about 2) and our sound guy said it was still to loud.
i personally like the amp, but wouldn't mind trading it in if lower wattage would help. looks like it wont.
what's an attunuator though? it looked like something that would lower my volume in the context you used axguitar, am i right?
oh, and steve, goin down from 65W to 50W wouldn't help that much :P
oh, and on a non-related question, i was lookin at similar priced tubes amps and was wondering: how often do you need to replace tubes?

An attenuator is like a volume control that you put between the amp and the speaker. It allows you to cut volume without killing tone.

And your answer is... volume pedal.
Either that or "volume box" in the FX loop.
An attenuator will do absolutely nothing for that amp.
All wattage determines is your amount of clean headroom.
Not totally true, wattage is a lot about headroom, but when pushing through the same number of speakers, a 100W amp will be 2x as loud as a 10W amp.
Answer:
so if i put a volume pedal in my fx loop it will fix all my problems? could i even get one like this and use the second output for the PA system? or is it a wierd output for tuners? this sounds like a perfect fix.

I think that the second tuner output is line level, which would be like your guitar is unamplified at all. I would avoid that because then you lose the tone of your speakers.
Answer:
i figure this should be moved to my new thread, here.

oh, and on a non-related question, i was lookin at similar priced tubes amps and was wondering: how often do you need to replace tubes? To your first statement, the reason I mentioned the AD50vt is two-fold. IMO a single 12" speaker gives a more balanced sound than a single 10" speaker (which the AD30vt has). Also, I realize that 65W and 50W aren't that different, which is why I mentioned the wattage control on the back of the amp. It allows you to turn down the volume of your amp post master-volume...it's like an attenuator for a hybrid amp. Thus you could effectively be running the 50W amp at say...5W. That's how I had it dialed in for bedroom playing. Originally Posted by Building429_Boy Wattage does not equal volume. Between 50 watts and 100 watts there is about a +5dB increase, I believe. Answer:
well, i guess the valvatronix thing sounds pretty cool then. i think i'll just go with a volume pedal though. easier that way.
Answer:
Is it too loud on stage or through the PA? If it's too loud on stage, one solution is to turn the amp around so it is facing away from the audience and other band members and have it mic'd. The sound guy can control volume from there.

I do that. Then I use my case to make it a little quieter...
