The Essentials.
Question: Right. I'm saving up my cash to buy myself a Peavey Classic 50 amp. I'm hoping that my dad will help out with the purchasing of said amp so I'll have some spare cash left over. I'd like to get some pedals and start putting together a decent rig. What pedals are essential to a live performance setting and should be on everyone's pedalboard? I play a mix of rock, jazz, and punk. A bit of a smorgasbord. Advise on pedal selection accordingly. And I'd rather buy seperate high-quality pedals rather than a single multi-effects box. I'll be shopping around anyways, but I'd like to get an idea of what you guys think is essential. Answer: if you get the peavey classic 50 with 4x10" speaker configuration you probably won't need any drive/distortion pedals once you learn how to set your knobs. the clean side is awesome for bluesy type work and even jazz if you set it up right, and the drive channel is very marshally in tone. Answer: for me, essentials would include a wah, delay, chorus, tremelo, and i've also always wanted a z-vex pedal. but that's not really essential if i can use an amp's distortion. Answer: I thought you'd never ask! my big 3: dist (you're covered), wah, and delay i noticed that the guys with expansive pedal boards usually only use those three FX Answer: Originally Posted by iAMspartacus I thought you'd never ask! my big 3: dist (you're covered), wah, and delay i noticed that the guys with expansive pedal boards usually only use those three FX Yeah thats true about large boards. You got dist/overdrive, so I would go for delay first, then wah or chorus. For delay look at the Line 6 DL-4 (but is a kind of pricey) and for chorus, its hard to go wrong. Don't get a cheap brand (arion, digitech, etc...). I would get the Boss CH-1 or Small clone or stone or throne or whatever the chorus one is Lots of effects are fun, but you probably won't use all of them for practical playing. They are just for rare solos or fun jamming. I mean, how many people really use a Whammy constantly? Or a TalkBox? Congrats on getting a new amp. God Bless! -Matt Answer: Right, so my most basic setup would look a little something like this then? G&L ASAT Custom Classic Semi-Hollow-> Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner-> Boss DD-3 Digital Delay-> Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble-> And maybe a Dunlop Cry Baby-> Peavey Classic 50 I've tried pedals in store and I find I tend to like Boss pedals the best. That may just be me though. Can anyone suggest a pedal that would be better in place of the ones I've listed? Answer: Don't get a cheap brand (arion, digitech, etc...). Now I wouldn't say Digitech is a "cheap" brand, it's more like the midrange for pedals. I personaly like the digitech chorus. My 3 picks, In order: 1) Dunlop classic wah (or whichever one you prefer) 2) Boss DD-5 delay. 3) EHX Black-finger compressor Answer: Originally Posted by Skeeter Right, so my most basic setup would look a little something like this then? Hey, spend the 25 more dollars and get the DD-6 instead of the DD-3, then build your own tap tempo (there is a thread explaining this.) It makes your delay much more versatile, seeing as the DD-3 isn't compatible with a tap tempo. It makes your delay much more versatile, seeing as the DD-3 isn't compatible with a tap tempo. The DD-6 already has tap tempo on it, and it costs a lot more than the DD-3. I think you're thinking of the DD-5, which needs an external tap tempo. For chorus, I'd look in to the Electro Harmonix Small Clone. Also try out a Vox Wah instead of a Crybaby and see which one you prefer. They're both good, just different sounding, so you may like one over the other. I'd look for ALL of these used on ebay. You can find them for much cheaper, and they're usually still in great shape. Answer: Did they discontinue the DD-5? Because they don't have it listed on MF. They do have the DD-6, though. It's only $25 more than the DD-3. Answer: Originally Posted by marylandfan1989 ...for chorus, its hard to go wrong. Don't get a cheap brand (arion, digitech, etc...). They're pretty pricey now, but you can find them used in some shops that don't know what they have. Most of the L.A. session guys have them on their boards or in their racks. The new one (the SCH-z) is still really good, especially for the $20 you pay for one. Everyone I've let play through my Arions have loved them. Answer: I though I'd never hear that... could we possibly hear clips? Answer: LWatford, please exscuse my disbeleif(spelling) but I'm afraid that I'm with Skilletswitch here...as would most. If you could post some proof here, I'd be more than willing to retract some of the thing nasty things I've said about arion (I refuse to capitolize this name) Answer: As for a delay, this seems like a very good pedal. I'm going to get my hands on one. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and there's a quicktime video of it in action. -Nick Answer: Originally Posted by Only Alive As for a delay, this seems like a very good pedal. I'd rather spend less, especially when other delays that will do the job are cheaper. However, if I've got the cash I might go for it. We'll see. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
