Which mod to BD-2?
Question: I picked up a used Bad Monkey cheap, and it has temporarily replaced my stock Blues Driver as my light overdrive on my board. (BTW, I've always heard great comments about the Bad Monkey, and I have to say I agree. I went in skeptical, but I instantly liked the sound better than the Blues Driver--more transparent, more reactive to playing, more harmonics and overtones). I still like the BD-2, so I think I'm going to get it modded (not an electronics person, so I will have to send it somewhere) and give it a second chance. I've heard lots of good comments about both the Keeley Phat mod and the Indyguitarist mods. Any votes for those? Others to consider? Answer: OMG, the keeley mod is to die for.... check out his website (or myspace) for some sound clips... AMAZING Answer: www.guitarpedalmods.com Zach has a mod for the BD-2. I've not tried it, but he's a nice guy and a very active member of the Guitar Geek boards. He'll do you right. Yeah, I like to nudge as much business as I can towards people I know are helping out others or have helped me out, especially if they happen to support the DIY community and run a business. His SN is Zacharybroyles btw. Answer: keeley will give discounts to those who will be using their pedals for church services, worship, etc. so you might want to look into that. Answer: I saw the Keeley church discount after I made the original post, so I went with them. They were unbelievably friendly to deal with on the phone. I will give an update on how it sounds once I get it back. Answer: You won't go wrong with the Keeley mod. I had it done to my BD-2 and it was a good experience. I did mine before the Phat switch came out, but I love the blue jewel light. Oh yeah, it sounds great and he is a very nice guy to deal with. Answer: I was gonna say to check out Analogman too, but.....oh well......that's cool about the keeley discount....I must check that out..... Answer: So, I got my Keeley modded BD-2 back, and here's the report... It is A LOT better, and I say that already having really liked the BD-2 in stock form. The combination of my Fulldrive II and my amp has been my staple overdrive/distortion thus far, but this Keeley BD-2 is going to give it a run for its money. It's hard to quantify exactly how it is better. The phat switch does add a boost to the lower frequencies, which does away with the Tubescreamer-type midrange honkiness. Much fuller on the lower end without getting muddy. Clarity overall has been improved. And the mods have really improved the higher gain level aspect of the pedal; it almost approaches a Muff-type fuzz with the gain all the way up, while still keeping that slight tube breakup sound on the lower end. Aside from that, the differences and improvements are subtle and at the same time profound. I've learned that the differences between a bad OD/distortion and a good OD/distortion are easily apparent, but the differences between a good OD/distortion and a great OD/distortion are subtle, all about shades of tone rather than chunks of tone. All in all, though, this mod took a pedal that I liked to begin with and made it instantly one of my favorites, if not the favorite on my board. Answer: glad you're happy :) Answer: Keeley has great customer service Answer: Originally Posted by wesley7777 Keeley has great customer service yeah they do... Answer: Is it worth the $75 for the DS1 mod? Has anyone tried it? I've been really unpleased with the DS1 tone but haven't really been able to find anything better. I'm just looking for a cheap way to get better tone out of an existing pedal... How can i get in on this 'church discount'? I can't find anything about it. What kind of discount is it? Thanks guys. -shane Answer: Originally Posted by snizzle Is it worth the $75 for the DS1 mod? Has anyone tried it?
