Buying an Amp off Ebay

Question:
Is this generally a bad idea? I have found that I can buy one for about 200 dollars less (I am looking at Fender's Hot Rod Deluxe) and it'd be a better choice for me price wise. Is there any reasons I should avoid it?

I've sold an amp on ebay. All I can say is check the seller's ratings, and make sure you're OK with the shipping cost. ALWAYS know the shipping cost before you bid.
And if you go ahead and bid, pay the extra cost for insurance!!!!!!!!

Ditto on knowing the seller as best you can and shipping. Try asking questions and see how they respond. I've bought and sold on eBay with very little problems.

$200 for a HRD sounds way too good to be true.
They're typically $300-350 used.

Well, the auction ain't over until it's over. The last 30 seconds of an auction for a hot item tells all.

Be careful about amps from across the border too. My friend bought one once from Canada on ebay, and long story short, he had some trouble.
Just make sure they have a lot of good ratings and that they know how to pack it well so that shipping insurance will be valid. Some people don't know that if you don't pack it to the specs necessary, whatever shipping company will likely not cover it even if you had insurance. And if the guy you bought it from is a deadbeat, he'll probably not refund your money.
I wouldn't say its a bad idea generally, as long as you do it right.

One other question.. Is it neccessarily bad to buy an amp used (in store)?

My Traynor and my cab are eBay babies. The only time I had a problem was when I bought a bass guitar from a seller in Canada. I did everything wrong that time. I let her talk me into committing to buy the guitar even before the auction ended - BIG no-no! It's against eBay policy for one. It was also her first transaction. Then, she wanted to charge me more for shipping than she quoted. That's why you need to firm up the shipping and have confidence in your seller BEFORE you ever bid.
Then, the guitar got lost in transit and she would not help me trace the item since she was already paid. The guitar ended up in a UPS warehouse at the border and it was only because I finally got in touch with an assistant to the President of UPS Canada who finally found it because the label came off. I finally got it after months of effort. I have been on the eBay forums regarding Canadian items and there are a lot of nightmare stories of items taking forever or getting lost with little recourse. Sadly, I won't deal with Canadian sellers anymore just because of the problems with customs and the higher shipping costs. This is nothing against them, just that shipping is like gambling. I have often wondered how large the warehouse is at the border that has lost items.
