What goes where?

Question:
Can we get a listing of where you might put different effects on a guitar amp... like before the Pre's or in the Loop?
I know that Delay's are supposed to go in the loop...
Answer:
the general rule of thumb is this:
wah-->gain modulators-->pitch/time modulators-->speaker
What you end up with is something like this
guitar-->wah-->OD/Dist/EQs/Comps-->Amp Input--(pre out)>Phase/Flange/Chorus/Delay/Tremolo--(post in)>power amp-->speaker.
Of course, tastes cause variation. I know a few guys put an EQ in the effects loop as a "master EQ" and to boost the signal into the power amp. Others put it first to have a good signal buffer at the beginning of the chain. Not everyone puts their delay in the effects loop, because not everyone wants crystal clear pings. Some people use multiple EQs to have a separate EQ for each gain box they might use.
some people don't even use effects.
Answer:
thank you.. i was gonna ask for the general concensus of where i should put my wah... you answered it...
Answer:
Also, volumes and volume boosts go at the end.
Answer:
It really is something you have to play around with. Following the basic rules will get you a good sound, though the more you play with things, you might find some things that work better with your pedals.
I tend to like this order (again, depending on pedals, being very generic here):
Wah
Comp (like it here, as it smooths the peaks created by the wah)
Gain effects (like "heavier" sounds into a lighter od/boost...though the other way around can be very cool also)
Volume Pedal (like it here so it doesn't kill the delay trails)
Modulation
Delays
Wah after distortion gives an interesting sound, a more dramatic filtering effect.

i was wondering what it would be like running a wah in my effects loop, then into a compressor then back into the amp..

Not necessarily. I put my volume pedal after the dirt and before my delays, so that I can get delayed volume swells. Also, a clean boost sounds great going into some Fuzz or Distortion pedals, a lot the same as putting one into an overdriven amp.

It wouldn't sound good...well, it wouldn't sound like a wah. At the lower end of the sweep you'd also get a greatly reduced volume, so you'd get weird wah swells. I sometimes put my Big Muff before my wah for this very reason. Plus, it brings out the slight octave up that my modded Muff has.
Generally the accepted layout for effects is:
Pitch Effects, (Whammy/OC-2 etc)>Envelope Followers (Auto Wah)>EQ/Wah>Gain Pedals>{EQ}>Modulation (Chorus, Flange etc)>Delay/Reverb
On my rig the Whammy comes before everything, and I have an OC-2 after all my gain pedals. I also have two delays before my chorus, and one after. So start with the basic chain, and then experiment.
