Need help with my setup
Question: It's my first stomp board and just bought it last week. I fiddled around with it all weekend and can't get the reverb to work correctly with my order. Here's my setup in order: Ernie Ball VP Vox wah wah Boss TU-2 Boss DS-1 TS808 ElectroHarmonix Small Clone Chorus Phase 100 Line 6 DL-4 Boss GE-7 ElectroHarmonix Holy Grail Reverb Everything works fine until the Holy Grail. It cuts off the sound. So right now, I'm playing w/o the reverb pedal. Any idea of why it's cutting out the sound? Any tips on making the order of my pedals any better? Thanks. Answer: Thats a pretty good setup. I dont know if I'd have the tuner there though. Perhaps a bad cable? Does the reverb work by itself? (not in the chain of the board). If not, its likley a bad solder joint. If so, then it could be the cable. Answer: If you're amp has an effects loop the general practice would be to put the delay and reverb in the effects loop. I'm also not sure if the phaser is supposed to go earlier in the chain or not. Answer: Thanks for the response guys. Actually, the reverb works fine. It's not a bad cable either. In fact, when I pull out the EQ and use the holy grail alone, the whole chain works. If I throw in the EQ and end with the holy grail, it mutes up on me. I know that the EQ works fine too because when I take out the Holy Grail, the chain works. So I'm think maybe it's a bad combination together. What do you guys think? Never heard of the effects loop. I'm planning to get a VOX AC30 next week. Answer: A bad combination doesn't make any sense. They may not sound good together, but it should still make sound. When you say that its not a bad cable, do you mean patch cable, or main cable? I've had bad patch cables and it's pretty common. An ac-30cc has an effects loop. It just puts whatever effects are in it after the pre-amp. If you play the amp clean it won't really matter and keeping them out front will save some cable. I would put the DS-1 after the tube-screamer and probably put the EQ closer to the gain effects to shape their sound directly. If you could put the tuner in the tuner out of the volume pedal, you could shorten your chain a bit. Answer: I recommend putting one of the buffering pedals first in line, like the DS-1, TS808 or maybe the eq. What the buffering does is increase the amount of current available, so your guitar's pickups don't get "loaded down", which causes tone suckage, most noticable in loss of high endl. I don't know for sure if the EB volume pedal is active or not, I'm under the impression that they are all passive - if it doesn't take a battery or power supply, I would move it out of your #1 spot. Personally, I like volume pedals at the end - that way it mutes everything including any inherent noise from anywhere upstream. Distortion and compression devices generally are put at the front of the chain. I'd put the DS-1 and the TS first... Answer: I agree, I would put the volume pedal at the end. If it's the VP Jr., it is definitely passive. And all you are doing with it at the front is just controlling the volume of the signal coming from the guitar. The rest of your chain is still sending unregulated signal to the amp. With the volume pedal at the end, you can control the amount of signal your amp is receiving. I also agree with Major Tom that the standard thinking is to put the compression and distortion first (after the wah, the wah is usually the very first in the chain). Finally, I would put the EQ pedal before the delay. With the EQ before the delay, you are cleaning up the signal to your taste and then the delay repeats the cleaned-up signal. With the EQ after the delay, the EQ is trying to clean up both the primary signal and the delay repeats. I've never heard of two pedals not working with each other. Like post above, I can see them just not making a sound you like, but never heard of one making the other not work at all. Answer: Could it be a power problem? Are you using a 1spot or some other kind of AC power source? So that when the reverb is plugged in it doesn't get enough power, so no sound comes out. If you take a different pedal out of the chain will the reverb work? Answer: Is it possible that the input/output jacks on the Holy Grail are reversed? I own a Russian Big Muff (both pedals are Electro-Harmonix) and that is the case--I have to reverse where the input goes. Sounds odd, but it could be that. Try it... Answer: Thanks for all your response. You hit the money JCLARDY. I actually bought a FURMAN pedal board and case. It comes with 9v wires. I used those wires to plug in the holy grail that's why it doesn't work. When I use the AC power plug it comes with...it works perfectly fine. Thanks for all the advice guys. Here's a pic of my setup for you all: Answer: Nice board Answer: Originally Posted by 67generation Thanks for all your response. You hit the money JCLARDY.
