need a new amp, any suggestions?
Question: Lets see, I need a new amp in the future, so I filled out the thing here. Some backround though, I live in mexico so I can’t just go to a music store and try out a mess of amps. I havn’t ever seen anything other than peavey here, and I don’t want that so I can’t buy used here either. I can buy off the internet fairly easily though. -Price Range – What can you afford? I’m aiming for the $200-$300 range -Necessity – Why do you need it? Because I can’t get good tone in a large setting Will you be playing out with it? Huh? I’ll be playing in church. If so, what sorts of places are you looking to play? Oh, I get it. Church mainly. Are you planning to mic the amp? Not if I can avoid it, the church is a little small (fits about 50-70 people at most) so mic-ing it might be over-powering. Will you have to rely on just your amp's volume from time to time? Yeah, I pretty much just said that I think. -Frequency – How often are you going to be playing out? Every week at two music practices, Sunday morning, and whenever I want to be loud Is this something that's going to be used alot, or just once a month? Pretty often, although I use my pignose for around the house. -Musical Style – Artists/bands/guitarists are more helpful to list than gneres, it's best to avoid listing genres. I like AA, switchfoot, thousand foot krutch, 12 stones, relient k, supertones, dire straits, Santana, SRV, some led zeppelin, and some people on the wow cd’s that I can’t recall… -Current Setup – What amp and guitar do you currently have? Right now I have an Epi LP-100, but I’ll be upgrading soon to something better. Maybe a schecter. For an amp I have a 15w crate amp that I plug into the PA on Sundays. What sort of effects do you use? TS-808 (thank you grandpa!) and visual sound H2O What is it about your setup that feels deficient? I don’t know the technical terms, but it just doesn’t sound as good as other amps I’ve heard. In other words, why do you want a new amp? I want more power so that I can by-pass the PA and I want better tone. -Experience – How long have you been playing guitar? 15 months or so Have you tried out amps already? Not a whole lot, I played some fender tube amp at a guitar center once though. I wasn’t really paying as much attencion to it as to the Alpine White Les paul studio in my hands though Which/How many? That was about it. What did you like/dislike about amps that you've already tried out? Can’t say -Personal Research – What amps are you interested in? I’ve looked at a few tube amps online, and these ones look pretty good : Valvetronix AD50VT 50W Fender Pro Junior Combo Pignose G40V Are you interested in getting a combo setup, or getting a head and cabinet separate? Combo would be better Tube? Solid State? Definitely tube -Shopping – Where do you plan on buying from? Probably musicians friend Do you want to purchase this new, or are you willing to be a little more patient and pick up a used model? I could get a used model, but buying new would be easier. Plus it wouldn’t be beat up. -Timeline – How soon do you need a new amp? No hurry, I don’t got any cash so I have to save up quite a bit. Do you already have the money for it, or is this something you're saving towards? I have forty bucks, no job, and an allowance of $5 a week. I need to save up a lot. That’s about it, thanks in advance for any feedback. Answer: If you don't mind buying used, you can pick up a Peavey Classic 30 off of ebay for around $300. I understand your perference for buying new, but you can get equipment for alot cheaper when you buy used. Usually people take care of their stuff fairly well, so most likely you can get one in good condition. Answer: As I've said before, used stuff is awesome. You don't generally get beat up stuff used, but more or less just stuff that's been sitting aorund in peoples' houses for a while. Peavey Classic 30 sounds like a great option. I'd be inclined to say now, though, a used Peavey Valveking might be your best bet. Answer: Originally Posted by irtrogdor Lets see, I need a new amp in the future, so I filled out the thing here. Never actually played one myself, though. Answer: I think a Peavey Classic may definitely fit what you are looking for. Answer: ok thanks guys, i'll look some into peavy. i didn't know that the vox i was looking at wasn't a tube amp... it didn't really say so... i'm glad you told me. i'm not entirely biasased towards new gear, only that it's usually easier to find. and you can count on being able to buy it when you can get it. and since i'm broke, i'm not really looking for super deals yet, just a good amp at a decent price. Answer: you wont find Peavey at GC though.. Answer: yeah you can probably find a classic 30 on craigslist or on ebay (within your vicinity) for 300 or around that range. you can also look into a used fender blues junior (250-300) or a classic 20 (150-250) Answer: I actually saw a Peavey Valveking at GC last time I went. I was surprised; looked like they just took it out of the box. Answer: unless GC just signed some deal with peavey that i'm unaware of.. maybe it was pre-owned... Answer: I love my Peavey Classic 30, but I have the head/212 cab, whereas you're best option would be a used combo. Great amp. Again, I was really surprised to see it. Answer: Originally Posted by AXguitar you wont find Peavey at GC though.. GC has actually just started carrying Peavey stuff. My bass player got a Peavey amp from GC yesterday. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
