New Amp Help.
Question: First of all I would like to apologize for doing this again as I've posted threads about amps, which one to buy, is this better? etc...I believe I've been quite a nuisance lately....I'm in the process of selling my Orange AD140tc b/c I need the money and I dont need that power...although I would miss the tone and distortion greatly... 1. After I sell the Orange...I'm willing to spend at max, $600 2. I play guitar during servince on Sundays and youth fellowship...other than church, it'd be in my home for practice...I'm not planning to mic the amp as I will have to use it's volume 100%... 3. I'll be playing every living day that I have free time for in place of watching tv or doing something unproductive..so basically everyday at home and twice a week at church... 4. Muscial sound...hmmmm modern praise.. Daniel Carson of Chris Tomlin's band, Sonicflood... Pop-punk...Relient k, All-American Rejects, Number One Gun, Sanctus Real... 5. Currently have Orange (will sell asap) and old solid state crate...my Orange is too powerful and something I won't need unless I become professional musician which is never...I pretty much use delay(line 6 dl-4), tremelo, and distortion pedals (fulltone fulldrive 2, ProCo Rat)...I used to have Gibson Les Paul but have downgraded to Mexico made Fender Stratocaster... 6. My experience with electric...haha I'm newb...about 1.5 years...acoustic maybe 3 years...still newb...I have tried a few amps out at GC...Fenders, Vox's, Marshalls, B-52...all of them were good in their own ways...but I didnt really like the modern day vox's...I just like Vox AC30...marshalls I dont really need...b-52 nice but kinda pricey and hard to find on ebay...fenders...nice cleans but distortion is shall I say not the best? I desperately want a Combo...lugging the cab and head for even a couple of weeks is such a nuisance!! Looking for Tube all the way!!! I personally dislike solids...no offense or anything... I'm really interested in peavey classic 50's 212 or 410,Traynor Custom Valve 50BLUE YCV50BLUE 50W All Tube 1x12 Combo Amp with Celestion Speaker,Traynor Custom Valve 40WR YCV40WR 40W All Tube 1x12 Combo Amp with Celestion Speaker, and Traynor Custom Valve 80 YCV80 80W All Tube 2x12 Combo Amp with Celestion Speakers ...again I dont know how much power I need since I won't mike the amp..whether I need a 212 or 112 or 410...dont know which one is sufficient... 7. Shopping-I plan to buy used on Ebay and Craigslist...new amps are way too expensive... 8. Well I'd like to have an amp withing the next 1-3 months...I have the money for it but would prefer to sell orange first... Thanks again for the advice and trouble... Answer: you can buy my mesa boogie f-30 combo!! It would probably sound great for what you play, but its got too much drive for me. Answer: you're not gonna find gold on 600 bucks... B52 too pricy? if B52 is too pricy, then count out most of the amps you've already tried.... you might like a peavey classic, i can't personally make head or tails of the controlls on it.. but hey, if you like it, don't expect to get much distortion from it... and why wont you mic the amp? Answer: i'll sell mine for 715 Answer: I have one thing to say in regards to your post. Read number 4. Listen to those artists over and over again, as I'm sure have, but with this in mind. Those people play guitar for a living. Their playing technique that they have honed after years of practice goes far more into making them sound professional (read: good) than any gear they play through. Food for thought. Answer: I say that you have the amp you need right now.. granted you'll probably never use the power tubes... but it'll give you the distortion you need... again, i'm gonna ask this, even though you haven't posted since i asked it earlier.. why wont you mic your amp? i mean... seriously... umm... you're gonna kill the overall mix if you don't mic your amp... i mean, do you not think that professionals mic their amps? well, they do... at every concert i've ever been to the amps were mic'd... why? well #1 volume, unless you're sportin a full stack it's hard to get that volume... #2 the mix- there are people called soundmen, and what they do is mix all the instruments together so that it sounds good to the audience... #3 would be spread of tone... you'll have 1, 2, or 4 speakers, all pointed in the same direction.. and even if your speakers have a great projection radius it's still not gonna compete with the PA speaker distribution... You see... the reason for an amp is less than to generate sound, yes they do, but you could plug your guitar directly into the PA and you'd get sound, however it'd sound pretty crappy without at least a Pre-amp or a modeler in front of it... amps are for tone... and again you have an orange, a tone beast... i mean you can probably get more money out of it than you paid for it... i'm sure you can find somebody with a lesser wattage AD amp and trade them for it... Food for thought. none of the guitarist in those pop punk bands he listed are good. if you want a tone close to an artist you like then getting a similar amp will help. for example if you wanted to a tone similar to "the edge" go with a Vox not a Mesa, unless your using a few pedals and runing the amp clean. its still not the same though. certain amps are more geared towards certain musical styles. I agree, it doesnt make sense to not mic your amp. if your not mic'ing it cuz you want to be able to crank the tubes, then isolate it somewhere further back if you can and mic it or throw the top of the flight case in front of it. does that orange amp come with some kind of 1/2 1/3 or 1/4 wattage option. i would be suprised if an amp like that didnt have that option. im just curious why did you buy that really expensive way to loud head in the first place? the AD 30 would of been the almost the exact same thing as that head but in a 30 watt class A 1x12 combo for less money and it probably would of had a better tone for what you play because it uses EL 84's (vox) instead of 34s (marshall) even 30 watts can easily be too loud unless you have attenuator Answer: Originally Posted by nick2282 none of the guitarist in those pop punk bands he listed are good. if you want a tone close to an artist you like then getting a similar amp will help. for example if you wanted to a tone similar to "the edge" go with a Vox not a Mesa, unless your using a few pedals and runing the amp clean. its still not the same though. certain amps are more geared towards certain musical styles. listen, this isn't a "bash genre x" thread. Regardless of what you think of those guitarists, you can't deny that in addition to an amp, a big part of their tone is playing style. Most companies advertising their amps as "class A" are getting off on a technicality. Realistically all Class A/B amps run in class A at low volumes. From what I understand, when pushed, Vox AC-30s show A/B characteristics...I'd expect the same from an Orange AD-30 Either way, none of this aside is really helping the OP find an amp. Answer: hate to go off topic here but how would we be able to find out before hand if an amp is truly class A or not Answer: Originally Posted by nick2282 hate to go off topic here but how would we be able to find out before hand if an amp is truly class A or not get the current response charts from the manufacturer. here's the explanation on the Vox/Class A issue from Aikenamps.com http://www.aikenamps.com/VoxAC30classA_2.html Also the Q&A there is pretty decent http://www.aikenamps.com/TI_Aiken_Q&A.html A correction from an earlier statement I made as well. Class A/B amps aren't running in Class A at low volumes, they simply beave similarly at low volumes. My apologies, all I saw was the chris tomlin reference and I assumed the rest he mentioned were other worship team guitarists. In any case, your response was not neccessary, and my post had merit. So often, younger guitarists really love the sound of a particular guitarist, they like listening to him(her) play. I was submitting that even though the guitar tone may be particularly desirable, their technique goes way into making it enjoyable to listen to. Answer: I bet The Edge sounds like The Edge no matter what amp he's playing through... Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
