Q's and Suggestions about Delay Pedal and looping...
Question: Line6 DL-4 Boss DD-6 Boss DD-20 Which delay pedal should I get? Or should I get some other alternatives?!? Do I really need 2 delay pedals and/or next to each other or seperately? and I'm so unfamiliar with "looping" effects....? Answer: I know a guy that has done some great looping with just a DD-6. However, I would recommend a DD-20 if you'll be doing it a lot. Of those pedals that you mentioned, it has the longest delay times (a little over 20 seconds if I remember right). I also (as a former DD-20 owner) think that it is the best delay pedal you listed there. Answer: by looping are your referring to an effects loop on an amp? well if so then the effects loop sends an output signal between the pre-amp and the power amp, so that you can have the choice of running an effect before or after the pre-amp, some effects must be looped, while some cannot, and some don't matter... i think most people run a delay after the preamp, i actually think it has to be, but i'm not sure, i've never used one... for this option, you must have an effects output and input on your amp... but this may not be what you were reffering to, but as far as i can see, that's what it is.. Answer: if you arent going to use a 20 second loop then go ahead and get the DL 4 over the DD 20. the DL 4 is a lot better. i know 3 people personally who got rid of there dd 20 to get a dl 4. it has more delay types and its better for playing live. play with the pedals and see what setting you like the most because they emulate some of the popular classic delay pedals. I always use the memory man deluxe setting, so if i could go back i would much rather just have a memory man than the dl4 Answer: The delay generally is after the preamp. This is because otherwise the delay would be distorted by the amp and any OD/dist pedals. By putting it afterwards, the delay you hear is everything, amp and pedals included, reproduced as they were. Also, which pedal is better is purely a matter of opinion. Generally the match is between the DL4 and DD-20. They each have their own unique features and such, so it really goes to which one would work better for each person. I prefer the DD-20 (I ABed them before I bought the DD-20, and personally think it sounds better) but others prefer the DL4. I do think it should be mentioned though, that the DL4 has a reputation for breaking down. That was another major factor in my choice over the DD-20. Answer: for looping some alternatives would be the Akai Head Rush, and the EHX 16-second delay. I like to have multiple delays next to each other to create polyrythmic repeats. If you just want some atmosphere, I'd suggest a simple analog delay, AD-9 or Memory Man are good. If you're looking for versatility the trend seems to be people moving away from the DL-4 in favor of the DD-20. I'm not a fan of the DL-4 myself... Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
