Ok...I want a REAL distortion pedal

Question:
I am getting very tired of dealing with cheapo distortion, or digital distortion, or just plain out worthless distortion. I want a high-quality analog pedal that can give me anything from blues to metal amounts of gain, allows my amps actual tone to still be there, and is 300 dollars or under. I am considering the Krank Distortus Maximus, I just really hate buying things that I haven't tried. I also really liked the looks of the subdecay high-gain distortion(I forget what it's called). Suggestions, reccomendations, and such would be ever so helpful. Thanks.
BJ
Answer:
The distortus maximus is designed to give a Krank channel. it doesn't let your amp shine, it makes it sound like a Krank. I'd say MI Audio Tube Zone might be the way to go, lots of gain, but very tweekable to match the sound of your amp.
Answer:
MXR Distortion +, or Guyatone PS-102 come to mind. I'm usually more into fuzz than distortion, but the PS-102 can really give you all 3, especially with your amp. Most boxes aimed at metal will all sound the same when dimed, no matter how much you pay (same with most amps). take a shopping trip through www.pedalgeek.com, there are many distortion pedals for sale there that might interest you.
Modded DS-1 is another good choice, if you'd like I could turn you on to a guy that mods these for a great price. I also know a guy in the Netherlands that builds a 4-in-1 RAT clone and a distortion pedal based on the preamp of a Mesa Boogie MKIII (I think) that you might find interesting. He builds all manner of boutique and vintage clones, so I'm sure you'd find something there you'd like.
Answer:
A Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde would work. Two channels on it - OD and Distortion. Sounds awesome, and it's built quite solidly. Well below your price point too.
Answer:
umm... distortion like that generally comes from the amp...

Actually, one of the most famous amps for hardcore and metal (The Marshall JCM800) uses clipping diodes for part of the distortion, like in a stomp box. The more clipping you get, the closer our waveform get to a square wave, the more it doesn't matter where you get your distortion. So a distortion pedal is just fine, I can point you to several incredible guitarists who would agree with.
Plus, as he has a tube amp, it'll help round out the lighter OD/distortion sounds. And he'll be pushing the front end of the amp, creating more natural tube break up. It'll all blend together in a nice, creamy distortion soup.

The most famous JCM800s, the 2203s, did not have clipping diodes. Of course, by todays standards, the 2203s would not be very hardcore or metal capable. They were the legendary amps of 1970s and early 1980s heavy metal

but most good amps have good distortion in them... and that's what most hardcore/metal bands use... however i have heard the Boss MT2 Metal Zone played through a 63 Dual Showman, and believe it or not, it sounded REALLY good...

I don't think that most of the amps a typical metal band is going to use is going to get the full spectrum of tones the users is looking for.
Answer:
well.. to some extent... at the very least a good one will bring him really close to most of them.. especially if it has more than 2 channels... or even 2 channels with switchable gains...
*edit* i reacant.. just noticed he's running a blues junior... that boss metal zone is really nice...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fulltone fulldrive. Personally I've never used one, but I've only ever heard great things about them. I think this will probably be the next pedal that I buy.
I do already have a Jekyll and Hyde which has already been mentioned here, I would be quite lost without it and I use tones from a clean boost to blues to classic rock to really heavy for both rhythm and lead with it.

there's a bunch of botique OD/Distortion pedals on there. The description of the Homebrew Big D sounds right up your alley. You'll also find a few of the lesser known recommendations there.

If you insist on a pedal, probably the best tube pedal is the demonizer by damage control USA. Check it out http://www.damagecontrolusa.com/dmz.htm
