Pedal boards, which one?
Question: I'm thinking about getting a pedal board and I think I have narrowed it down to two: DigiTech GNX-3 or Line 6 PODxt Live. What do you guys think? Answer: I personally own the PODxt Live, but have never used the DigiTech, although I have owned DigiTech multi-effects before. I think what you need to decide is how exactly you are going to use this. Recording? Live? Also, do you want just effects, or effects and amp modeling? The PODxt Live basically does everything pretty well. Probably not quite as good as single effects, but in a live situation, I find it to be very versatile (volume pedal / wah / tuner all built in). Now you will have to work with it to get the sounds that you'd like, but you can get some pretty good sounding stuff. Whenever you are looking at multieffects pedals, don't let the factory presets fool you...99% of the time they are way over the top and sound like crap in just about any situation. As far as amp modeling goes with the POD...it's just ok. I mean, yeah, you can get some different sounds, and some of them are pretty cool, but you will never be able to model the feeling you get when standing in front of a *insert sweet vintage amp here* cranked to 11. That being said, if you are recording and going direct from the POD, it is versatile. I really don't suggest using amp modeling with your amp though, as with mine it tended to muddy up the tone. If you went direct into a PA with it using amp modeling (which I have not yet tried), you may get better results. Here's the way I see it...you could always get a new PODxt Live, try it out, and if you don't like it sell it on eBay in the next few weeks, and looking at the prices they've been selling for, you probably won't lose more than about $20. And if you like it, your set. Unfortunately my lack of experience with the DigiTech limits me as to how well I can compare the two, but I can tell you that I'm happy with my PODxt Live. No, it is not the equivalent of having the actual effect / amp / cab, but it gets close enough that in a live situation it sounds good. Recorded, yeah, it would probably sound good too. Check out harmony-central.com for reviews as well, and if you can, try demoing both of them before you buy. If that's not possible, you may just have to read up on the two and make your best judgment...you can always resell it and you won't lose too much, especially if you buy it used in the first place. Of those two i would get the pod. Now i have only played around with it in the store but it seemed to be built better than the digitech, sounded better, and was easier to use in my opinion Answer: I was pretty much set on the PODxt but I saw it doesn't have a drum machine like the DigiTech has. How well do drum machines work? As for what I need it for, I want to be able to record on it and if drum machines really work then one would be nice. Answer: Originally Posted by ccmdude As for what I need it for, I want to be able to record on it and if drum machines really work then one would be nice. Well I mean yeah, drum machines work and all, but you really won't be able to use it live. As for recording, it's not going to sound as good as a real drummer, or an actual stand-alone drum machine / drum machine software. In my opinion it's more of a novelty thing, and I personally would not base my choice on drum machine or a lack thereof. Answer: Do you think the sound the PODxt puts out is good enough for playing gigs? I read alot of reviews were people said it wasn't. I guess I will try them out before I buy one. Answer: Yeah, I gigged with mine the other day and thought it sounded pretty darn good, received a couple complements from bandmates who hadn't heard it before on my tone. Tone is really subjective dude, and the people who say it's not good enough to gig with might not have spent enough time tweaking the effects to their liking, their amp might have been coloring the tone too much...there's a lot of variables here and you can't just immediately determine "it sucks" or "it doesn't" simply because some guy somewhere says so. Trying it out yourself is best if you can. However, I think that as far as multi-effects go, the POD has something for everybody. Answer: Well the only multi effect pedal I'd get would be a podxt live. Answer: a friend of mine has gone from a Line6 Spider II to a Line6 PODxt Live! and has had alot of success with Line6 products because he takes the time to work with them. i haven't heard him live, but his recordings are superb. Answer: Ok, you guys have convinced me, I'm going to get a PODxt live. (After I play it.) Answer: I played a line6 guitar threw an podxt live into some head phones, and I was impressed by the variaty or guitar choices threw various effects. Answer: Yeah, it sounds good in the headphones. Thing is though, if you are going to use it live, to get that same tone you want to run it straight to the PA or through the power section of your amp (not the preamp), otherwise it will color the tone too much. If you are using it with an amp live, set the amp as clean as possible unless you are just using the podxt live for effects, in which case you could put it in your effects loop and use your amp preamp as you wish. Answer: Yeah. I don't realy trust big amps, lots of effects, and multi effect processor/emulators live. And my setup is true to my trusts. Guitar---Rat*---AD-9----Amp. *The rat isn't esentail to my playing. Niether is the delay. But their are neat to have. Answer: You should also check out the Vox floor unit, I know it sounds great..
