Money to blow, Guitar Center's near
Question: Hey everybody, This might seem like a newbe thread, and maybe it is, but I figured I'd ask you all your opinions on this subject. I've got a Guitar Center gift card that I received for a birthday present. It has about $12.50 I've got another Guitar Center gift card I'll be getting tomorrow (I think), which is probably going to be around $75. I've got a $50 debate card from a Cingular rebate. I've got a $60 check I'll be cashing tomorrow. All that combined together gives me around $200. Granted, I could be a little more responsible and deposit the $60 check in the bank, but I'd still have around $140 to spend. There's a Guitar Center about 15 minutes away from where I work, and I'm thinking about paying it a visit tomorrow evening. Basically, I want another pedal. I'm debating between getting a compressor (Boss, maybe?), a chorus (I'm thinking Boss or the Small Clone), or perhaps both. What are all of your thoughts on this? Should I go through with it? I definately want both of them eventually, but I don't know...if I get the chorus, I'll have to get two short music cables in addition to the connection from one pedel to the next (I've got an effects loop I'll be putting the chorus in). If you know of a compressor that is better then the Boss one, tell me. If you have an opinion on the chorus pedals, tell me. Responses are appreciated. Answer: from what I understand, most compressors are better than the standard Boss one. I've never used a compressor though, so I don't know much. Answer: For the chorus, it depends on what you're looking for. Having owned both the Boss and the Small Clone, the warmth of the analog Small Clone suited my taste much more than the digital Boss, so that it took about ten seconds of listening to the Small Clone to decide that I was keeping it and the Boss was going. It's about your taste, though, so I would go listen to both. Answer: Get both...these are in the must have catagory for me. Compression, OD, delay and chorus.....my essential effects list..... Answer: a compressor is nice, especially if you use a wah alot, also helps if it's a true bypass Answer: Originally Posted by JaytheK I've been looking online at compression pedals, and I noticed the Electro-Harmonix Black Finger had good reviews. Hmmm, IMO compressors won't really change your sound that much. I think their overrated. This is coming from a guy who had the Boss compressor and a Barber Tone Press. I did some more research, and it appears that the Black Finger introduces more noise then I'd like. Plus it's rather expensive. Answer: From what ive heard the boss comp sucks. Losts of hiss and stuff. But ive heard great things of the mxr dyna comp , Or if you can find on graigslist or something cacsue there old is a ross compressor. I think another pedal you should include in your list and look into is a EQ pedal. Just a thought. Answer: I'll tell you what...Ive got a CE5 that I'll trade straight up for you C30. I'll even throw in a Super QUIKTune tuner! Answer: Originally Posted by RipVanWinkle I'll tell you what...Ive got a CE5 that I'll trade straight up for you C30. I'll even throw in a Super QUIKTune tuner! Will you really? Oh boy! Finally I'll have a chorus pedal! Seriously though, in reference to the EQ pedal recommendation, that's something I'll eventually get as well. However, I've only got so much money I can spend right now, so I've got priorities. Answer: Well don't laugh, but i've seen dano fish'n'chips on some of the nicest boards i've seen. they seem to work wonders, are nice and quiet, and only cost like 30 bucks. The boss comp is not so hot. it is really noisy at generous compression levels and to me isn't a great comp. It is ridiculously priced for a pedal of its nature. I personally just bought a behringer comp because i like it better than the boss, and can be more subtle than a dyna comp. Chorus is subjective. I like tone of the EHX but it doesn't have a mix control which the boss does. This is a negative for ME because it don't always want to sound like a new wave band from the 80's. I like my MOD to be a little bit more subtle. That is just me though. Personally, I would buy a nice delay pedal with that money before a comp or chorus. The boss dd 20 might be in your range. The modulation mode could be used for your chorus and you could have 4 other modes to choose from. I just think I would put that higher on the priority list than a comp. Answer: i was going to suggest the fish n chips as well...seriously! It is very good at what it does...why spend 2 or 3 times the price for something in a different box. Answer: Hmmmm.....I don't know how the effects selection is at your guitar center...but here it's not too great (they haven't updated in about two years...oh, except for multi effects....), but I'll try and keep my suggestions to what I'm assuming they will have. First, for compressor, I would look into the MXR Dynacomp. From what I remember it's basically a Ross compressor clone, plus they're pretty cheap. For chorus they may have the MXR Chorus there you could check out, but I'm pretty sure they'll have the EHX Small Clone and The Boss CE-whatever and CH-whatever. I've tried both of the bosses before, and was pretty much let down. Try the Clone, and check their used section for anything interesting. Though big and rare, an EHX Clone Theory can be had for around $100-$150 used in pretty good condition. My final suggestion would be to look into the EHX Deluxe Memory Man. It's in your price range (you can haggle it down to less than $200, no worries), and has a great chorused delay sound. Check it out. I've read reviews about them, and they seem to be good pedals...what about the "MXR M-132 Super Comp Compressor Pedal"? http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/pro...ull_sku=151113 It appears to be the same thing as the Dynacomp, only with an additional "Attack" knob (a feature that I would appreciate). Anybody have any experience with the SuperComp? Originally Posted by Griffon My final suggestion would be to look into the EHX Deluxe Memory Man. It sounds like something I might like. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
