Which of these deals is the best?
Question: Ive been looking into getting an all-tube amp instead of my 2 hybrids. These are deals Ive been able to work with ebayers/craigs listers: Peavey Classic 30...seen regularly on ebay for BIN $300 w/30-40 shipping Fender Hot Rod Deluxe $350...no shipping, craigs list Traynor YCV80 $400...no shipping, semi-local, reserve-not-met ebay item(a little powerful for what I need) Fender Blues Jr $275 (no that great of a deal IMO) What do you guys think? Ive been around a while...but if you dont know, I play at church...no hi-gain...I split the time about 50/50 between clean and my diff overdrive pedals, but no punk rock or metal...I fine every day that I enjoy the thick sound of my neck pickup more and more. I dont play blues or jazz. Answer: I'm partial to the C30 and it's kind though I've used the HRDx in the past and been happy with them. Either of those prices don't seem out of line with the current used market. The Traynor I know little about but I have played through a couple of the modern Traynor tube amps and was quite impressed with their tone. They might be the sleeper of the all-tube amps though they do cost a bit more than their Fender or Peavey counterparts. The Blues Jr is not that great of a deal in relation to the C30 with can be had for little more and is a much more "useable" amp, imho. Answer: I've owned the c30, the blues JR and have played extensively on the HRDx....never played though the traynor 80 watter. I now own a Crate Palomino V32, and I've never ever been happier. I love love love the sound of it. It's the same aamp as a Crate V-series 3112 only blonde.I was at GC in a private room bonding with a HRDx, and the salesman brought in the Palomino. It sounded SO MUCH BETTER! It's only 30 watts, and it's still too loud for church, and we have a pretty big PA and our congregation likes to rock, but it cuts like a knife and the sound guys give me grief. Thing is, to really get the sweet sound out of a tube amp, you gotta push those power tubes. My 30 watter is plenty loud....I can't imagine using an 80w tube amp!! Answer: The only crazy thing about the traynor that keeps bringing me back to it, is that new, from MF its like $840...and the YCV 20-50s range from $600-750...thats a pretty good deal...but you are probably right...thats alot of power to tote around...but my Deuce VT is 100 watts (4 6L6 output tubes). I KNOW for a fact that I'd be happy with a Hot Rod Delxe. The guy has the footswitch and the dust cover for it included. I also know Id be very happy with the classic 30...The classic 30 would also be 50 bucks less. I really dont have the money at the moment..but many people have been offering me $250 for my westminster SG copy on craigslist...I offered it as part of a trade that would include an all-tube amp...nobody wanted to trade, but many people wanted to buy it...I will also have $150 cash to do whatever I wish at the beginning of August....hm... Answer: And with shipping, the classic 30 would be almost as expensive as the HR Dlx... Answer: wait for a Classic 30 to come up on craigslist...or put up a wanted listing in the musical instruments section for one. One thing I remember about my HRDlx is that it was beastly loud for church. $350 is a good deal on one too...though I recently saw one on the San Diego CL for $285...DANG! Answer: Well, I did that...I posted a "WTB: Peavey Classic 30, Fender Hot Rod Delux or Blues Jr", and thats how I got a deal on the HRDlx...Nothing on the classic 30 yet though. The volume is another one of my concerns. With my Deuce, I literally have the Gain at around 1.5-2 out of 10, I have my post at around 4-6 out of 10. That is only like using 20-30 Percent of its power. Now, I do want to be able to crank it to get a good sound, but like I said, I will mostly play clean with pedals for distortion...as a matter of fact, I have had and used the deuce for 6 or 7 months and have used the 2nd channel for distortion 1 time. (its not really a "drive" channel, just a 2nd channel). Our church will sit around probably 250-300 people...would the Classic 30 let me get the levels I want and drive the amp at the same time? And another question... Is this basically a fancy looking major tom attenuator? Here is a link to the auction http://cgi.ebay.com/TUBE-AMP-VOLUME-...QQcmdZViewItem If this is...then this guy lives in the same city as me, and I could get one from him...If it lets me drop the volume on the HRDlx, then it would be a perfect match! That is NOT an attenuator. People on the Carvin boards ask about these all the time. You put it in your FX loop and it acts as a Master Volume. It's a pot with input and output jacks. Same thing would happen if you put a volume pedal in the FX loop. Answer: you might look up the classic 20 as well on ebay. They are not as common, but its one more possibility. Driving the powerstage of a tube amp with the preamp set clean will just make your clean sound fat and yummy. My church averages about 200 and my 30 watt tube amp is way too loud to drive properly. I've tried all sorts of stuff, including blocking the speaker with a sleeping bag. I'm just now putting the finishing touches on an extention cab, that is what people refer to as an "isolation" cab.....it's basically a speaker built with a box around it. You mic it from inside. The thing works great! Drops my too loud amp down to about the level of a small TV speaker....This way, you get the best of both worlds, a pushed power stage and a pushed speaker, and a low level.....~Shawn Answer: Originally Posted by RipVanWinkle Now, I do want to be able to crank it to get a good sound, but like I said, I will mostly play clean with pedals for distortion...as a matter of fact, I have had and used the deuce for 6 or 7 months and have used the 2nd channel for distortion 1 time. They are just not as nice and basically defeat the point of a tube amp. There is a reason I have 10-15 pedals but only use 4 or 5. Answer: Originally Posted by BillSPrestonEsq With a nice tube amp, you probably are not going to want pedals for your distortion. I would qualify this statement to say that with a versatile tube amp...not necessarily just a nice one, as I could think of a few nice tube amps that aren't going to get the distortion that alot of players want. I am just trying to look at the situation objectively. By nice I kind of mean nice for your application. For example, a 5150 is nice for metal, but royally sucks for clean and mild praise and worship stuff. Its "niceness" kind of varies by use.
