2 new pedalboards

Question:
Hello all.
If you remember, some of my older pedal boards have simply been a piece of plywood with an odd layout. Being inexperienced in the building, I basically would cut out some thick garage floor foam in the setup my pedal board woudl be, then stick hook velcro under that and secure everything down. While it did look neat sometimes, it would be impractical after I got a new pedal or changed something up....
...like this
As I have said the last week or 2, I have constructed a new pedal board. I have sold and changed many pedals...taken out some of the tone suckers, and added a few goodies...all in the pursuit of good sound. It is a pretty simple concept. I made a pedal board that was hollow underneath...kind of a triangle. I then covered it with industrial strength carpeting, which holds the hook side of velcro really well. It also lets me change up pedals at will (since I have a small pile of extra pedals now).
I also installed a super storage compartment...its not all that practical in retrospect, but cool nonetheless...perfect for ebows
and I drilled holes in the board and cut the carpeting so I could run all cables (audio and power) underneath...it looks much nicer.
Now, playing it for the first time last sunday brought up some interesting problems that I did not think of. The biggest being, the angle at which I have to push the buttons and switches....especially the volume...its pretty much useless at the angle it stands.
I also built this dude out of some HEAVY duty plywood and a cut up 2x4.
Upon browsing the setups in the amp sub-forum, I ran across this beauty.
This thing made me really start thinking...My "new" (impractical) pedal board was built on Saturday...the next day, I was unhappy with it..So on Monday I began construction on a new pedal board.
Ive pretty much ripped the guys idea straight off...sorry...hes been a member for a whole year and only has 6 posts...it doesnt look like he comes here much...but "SelaVie" (the said member), if you see this, your board rocks
Ive got it all framed up and ready to progress...the only thing in my way is more funds to continue the board...Ive done a great deal of gear related stuff the last month, so I agreed with the wife to wait until the end of the month (when we get paid) to continue. It really shouldnt cost much more...just a bracket or 2 and the vinyl...which Ive already priced at a local fabric store at $6/yard...I want to do 2 colors like the dude above did, so Ill probably need 2 yards. Other than that...I may explore some different electrical solutions, but thats about it...heres what Ive got so far.
Ill also need to find some black or grey indusrtial carpeting...its much larger than my inspiration piece...heres a pic just to gain some perspective on the size of the board...It may very well be much larger than I need...
Sorry to be so long winded...as my new board progresses, I'll make a dedicated thread to it to chart the progress...have fun...its my bed time!
Answer:
Wow, the newest one is huge. Looks cool though. I'll probably be constructing something similar in the near future (but about 10 times smaller ). I'll have my amp's footswitch, DD-3, NS-2, some chorus pedal and room for expansion. Keep us updated!
Answer:
yeah...I think its pretty neat!
Answer:
Ok...well...
I sort of got the project jumpstarted, and the board is finished
I also had enough vinyl to cover the amp as well to match...I just need to get matching (grey hopfully) fabric for the grille cloth...the blue doesnt do much justice...and here is the amp and board (with effects all hooked up)
what do you guys think?
Answer:
You've done a good job. How much does it weigh with all your pedals?
Answer:
not as much as the first green one...its pretty hefty though...Ill have to weigh it.
Answer:
Have you considered George L cables? I have my board wired with them. You can buy the cable by the foot and the ends separately to make whatever size you need... no soldering. The ends can either by straight or right angle. They work great.
Answer:
Well...
I have thought about a different cable solution, but it seems that here latley, the more I play and sculpt my tone, the less pedals I use...and the more I take off the board. The only reason I soldered one of the cables was to put a different type of head on it (angled instead of straight).
Here pretty soon I will probably take out a delay and the overdrive.
Answer:
oh yeah...
Here is the amp with the new grille cloth. I know...its crazy, but Im going to put a new cloth in it sometime soon. It looks cool, but is way too thick, and it muffles alot of sound...Sunday I heard more sound coming out of the back of the amp than the front.
Answer:
you must have a lot of time on your hands...
Answer:
Well, I did.
I work for the school district in Arlington TX. I manage a computer lab, and have the summers off. So...I do alot of building of things like this between camps and mission trips...
This is my first week back at work, but the kids still dont come back until the 14th of Aug...
Answer:
Awesome job on the board. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I am very flattered that you liked it enough for it to inspire you! I basically got the idea from another board that I saw, so don't feel bad! Looks great!
Answer:
Looks really nice. I just finished mine, but I wanted to wheel it out of the way so it's more portable so I put it on casters.
