Another amp suggestion thread
Question: Alright, I wouldn't make one of these unless I really needed some ideas. I bought a Peavey 5150 combo several weeks ago, but i think i am going to return it. For starters, it has been in the repair shop almost the entire time ive owned it. Its missing 2 panels, the footswitch, and it came with crappy old tubes(and it was still marked at $799 at GC). Well i got new tubes, for free, but im still not that happy with it. I dont know if it is because it is just a 212, but it sounds really thin and trebly. Ive tried adjusting it for hours at a time, but I just can't find that sweet sound. I need a new amp, one that is powerful enough to play with a full band. Sometimes we play at venues that don't mic the amps, so it has to be loud enough to be heard over bass, guitar, and drums. We play a mix of heavy rock/metal/alternative. From what i heard about the 5150 i thought it would be the perfect amp for me. Lots of gain, great distortion, etc but i just wasn't that happy with it. So i need something else that fits that description(preferabbly tube). Ive used the B52 at-100 tube half stack, and it was ok but I wasn't crazy about it either. I can't spend more than $700-800, and im more than willing to buy used. So bring on the suggestions... Answer: I may get a lot of opposition for saying this, but you may want to try out a Vox Valvetronix. Answer: Originally Posted by SoapbarII I may get a lot of opposition for saying this, but you may want to try out a Vox Valvetronix. Uh... No. (he's looking for tube amps, not modelers) I've talked to a guy who owns both a 5150 and a Carvin MTS. He says the MTS blows it out of the water. If you can, seriously look into Carvin. The MTS, Legacy, and V3 are all high gain 50/100 watt tube amps. Answer: is rack gear an option? Answer: Marshall JCM900 halfstack might be right up your alley. Answer: i was thinking about a marshall 900 half stack, if i can afford it. I will looking into the carvin too. Has anyone tried the peavey valveking line? or heard anything about them? Has anyone tried the peavey valveking line? or heard anything about them? Thomaspg70 has a VK 112. Someone else has one too...check the amp list. I can't remember who the other person is right now. Answer: You might try to pic-up a used Sovtek Mig 50 or 100. It is based off a JCM800 and can be had on ebay for about 300-500. I have tried the halfstack and the 2x12 combo and can say that it is the amp I am getting next, when something happens to my Valvetronix. I didn't try it with a low tuned guitar, so I don't know about that, but I love it's high gain tone so much. The reason I am keeping my Valvetronix is is does really low tunings like drop B beautifully. Answer: Originally Posted by thesteve Marshall JCM900 halfstack might be right up your alley. I got me one of them there Marshalls right here in my trusty ole Digitech GNX3000! Come to think of it, I got a bunch of amps in there to choose from. My tube amps have been gathering dust lately. And my back's lovin' it too. Answer: Ok im thinking i might get a Carvin MTS 3200 or the Peavey Valveking. Im thinking about getting an avatar cab too, if i have room left in the budget. I think i saw an mts at guitar center last night, if its still there my buddy who works there can get a good amount knocked off the price Answer: Originally Posted by SenorPapaCabasa Ok im thinking i might get a Carvin MTS 3200 or the Peavey Valveking. The "hiss" of a lot of tube amps is non-existant on the MTS. I'm very satisfied. It has enough gain to play metal, and when the volume is up around 4+, it sounds gooooooood. Answer: Nice, cause you couldn't stand within a half mile of the 5150 and not get hiss that would make your ears bleed. Im really hoping that i did see a carvin at guitar center, and it wasnt a dream or something. i hate it when that happens..... Answer: Originally Posted by Building429_Boy Cool. Also, it's not cool that you dissed the Valvetronix series without playing them extensively enough to have a valid opinion on them. (to the OP: The Head of the Valvetronix series is actually very very impressive and pulls off some hi-gain tones that you wouldn't belive). My Question to the OP: Have you tried other 5150s? The 5150 is an absolutely wonderful amp for all-things hi-gain. I'm thinking you really got screwed on your particular deal and picked up a lemon. Without the onboard noise gate on my spider II, it would hiss a lot.
