Peavey Classic 50-212

Question:
I used to have a Classic 50, but traded it for a Fender Performer 1000. The Peavey just didn't sound good to me at all, but I'm considering giving it another chance. I was thinking about changing out the speakers to Celestion G-12 Vintage 30's (the Performer has a single G-12), and trying some different tubes. I'm looking for a clean, "glassy" tone and I want more distortion from the drive channel. Anyone have some tubes that they'd like to suggest?
Answer:
I'm thinking maybe there was something wrong with yours? I know tone is so subjective, but for a while I was seriously considering buying a classic 50 212 because of the metal tone I achieved on thing with no pedals.
What guitar are you playing through? Pickups? Hotrods?
Answer:
Hmm...I would check out the 4x10" setup too. It's pretty heavy (i hate carrying my guitarist's), but the tone is great. I have always felt the 10s held together a very tight clean sound, and they saturated easily enough to get a great rock sound too.
you can listen to a Fender Stratocaster through a Peavey Classic 50 410 at www.myspace.com/yourfavoriteband (though the song "Never" was recorded with a different guitar)

I couldn't get my metal tones on the Classic 50 Head I played the other day. Didn't quite have enough gain nor quite the right tone. Good sound, but I can see where the drive wouldn't be enough for many players.
Answer:
I would actually agree with you. I've played the c50 head probably the same amount of time I've played the 212 and 410 combos, and for some reason, I couldn't get the same amount of gain or range of EQ out of the head as I could with the combos. However, I could see the head seriously benefitting from a tubescreamer in front of it. Have any of you seen the new combos (new head also?)? They seemed to be voiced for a bit more modern styles of rock.
Answer:
The new ones? No I have not. Probably should try to sometime, though.
