Vox Valvetronix owners...
Question: I have more and more started to just play clean. I am starting to love playing clean so much, but I like ti very clean. My problem is most (if not all) of the cleans on my vox have just a slight dirt on them. I really don't like that, and I don't really know how to clean it up. Any suggestions? Answer: Cut the signal some in front of the amp, like with an eq pedal or something, probably 3 - 6 db. Devices that emulate tube circuits kinda act like tube circuits - the stronger the signal fed to the input, the higher the amount of saturation. What does your guitar and signal chain consist of? Another thing you could try, I don't know how similar the circuitry is, but I have a Vox Tonelab desktop that I use for headphone practice. I put a 12AT7 tube in it instead of the stock 12AX7, that seemed to clean the models up a bit on the low gain settings. Oh yeah...if you have a compressor, you could try taming the signal just a bit in front of the amp. Light compression at a relatively high threshold. Answer: But isn't that "little bit of dirt" tone very saught after? I usually like a bit of dirt to my cleans. Answer: You can also turn your gain down and your volume up... With the way those amps are set up I don't see how you could *not* get a clean sound out of it with a little tweaking. It could be that your guitar has too hot of an output, too. Humbuckers? I get cleans out of mine all day with my Tele and my G&L, but no humbuckers. Answer: Originally Posted by Brent You can also turn your gain down and your volume up... My humbucker equipped guitars tend to over-drive my amps, and they are just PAF types, not high output humbers. They saturatie a bit too much in the early gain stages if I plug straight in. I like to cut the signal 3 - 6 db, to about the signal level of a stock tele or strat. Answer: One of the guitarists in my band has a Flying V, and he uses my Vox when we practice b/c I left it at the place we practice since I've got a Classic 30 now. It *is* quite difficult to get a clean sound from that amp with the humbuckers in that thing. Well, I pretty much figured it out. The thing was I had the wattage output on like5 watts so I could crank the OD (it says it helps it a little in the manual and hey, its still has one tube) but then whe I would go for clean I would have to turn both the volume (not the master) and the gain really high to get any sound. Well, I just put the wattage on 30 so have the gain almost all the way down and I can get my clean now . (on a side note, the OD doesn't soudn any different from the 5 watts. Stupid manuals.
