Instrument Score Order
Question: I am writing a piece and I am not exactly sure which order the instruments should be scored in. I understand that there are different methods for arranging (orchestral, jazz, etc.) but I'm not sure which of those my piece fits into. The most accurate description I could give would be to say that it's contemporary. Anyway, if someone knows what order I put these in help would be appriciated. Piano Violin 1 Violin 2 Cello Synth Pad Clarinet (Eb) Soprano Voice Alto Voice Thanks heaps. Piano Violin 1 Violin 2 Cello Synth Pad Clarinet (Eb) Soprano Voice Alto Voice Thanks heaps. The standard orchestral score order is as follows: Woodwinds Brass Other Stuff Voice Strings Individual instruments descend in proportion to pitch: Soprano Alto Violin I Violin II Cello For the piano and synth, you have a couple of options: 1) Stick them in the Other Stuff" category in the standard order. 2) In most "contemporary" arrangements, they're at the bottom. 3) With either option, I'd probably put the synth above the piano. Other possible changes to the traditional orchestral score model are: 1) If the voices are extremely predominant, maybe put them at the top. 2) If you have an instrument with a solo part throughout, maybe put it top. 3) Maybe put a vocal melody line with chord symbols (if appropriate) at the top. Answer: Fantastic, thanks. Percussion (ie Drum Kit) is at the bottom isn't it? Answer: Originally Posted by Vespertine Fantastic, thanks. Percussion (ie Drum Kit) is at the bottom isn't it? In traditional order, percussion is in that "other" category. I have no idea for jazz, but it may very well be at the bottom (although, I would actually have guessed piano first for the bottom in a jazz score... but, like I said, I don't know).
