Scat

Question:
So, in general I'm sort of a newbie to jazz; I've only been in a combo for the last year. I figured I'd branch out and try something different, so last time at my combo I was like "KEITH, LET ME SCAT" and he did, and it was ok, buuut how do you get better at it? Anyone got tips for scatting? Unfortunately, I can never think of what I want to sing as I'm singing, but I can always think of exciting melodies or whatever when I'm just thinking to myself...*shrug*
Answer:
From what I've always heard, it's usually stuff like,
"buh ga duh wah deet, doot, stik-a-tik-at-oo-wa bow, woot, iv-a-da-rai-na-kah....."
Just syllables to rhythm, and my observation is that the rhythm really makes it or breaks it, not necessarily the syllables.
I'd say just look for interesting ways to play with the rhythm. If you're basing things off the 16th, try different extended patterns of sound and silence throughout the count....
Other than that, no ideas. I do know that it's fun to listen to people who are good at "scatting."
