what does it mean when they say "Progressive Line-up"
Question: Hi everyone, I've been leading worship for sometime, and lately our church sponsored a music seminar on worship leading and regarding church band. The lecturers mentioned about a 'progressive line-up', i tried to ask this to them but then it still not clear to me what this really means. This is in preparing your line-up for praise and worship, how you guys chose songs for worship? Hope you could help. thnks a bunch Answer: My best guess is that it means, "Don't play all those old boring hymns. Church is for young people; play their music." Yes, I'm cynical right now. Answer: Uh-oh, im sorry but i don't agree that the church is for young people, so play their music. During the seminar they remind us not to neglect the hymns and old songs. Hymns have deeper meaning compare to praise and worship songs. Answer: Oh, ok. In that case I have no clue. Believe me, I don't think church is just for young people either. I was saying that that's how I would generally interpret a statement like that--hence the quotation marks. Answer: It might be an idea that you choose songs that progress naturally from one to the other, either in terms of key/tempo/feel, or in terms of the words of the song. Answer: It could mean that at any moment they're liable to kick into a Dream Theater, ELP, Neal Morse, or early Kansas tune. On a side note, I'd love to do a truly progressive worship set sometime in my life. Just play the set in the style of any number of prog bands out there. I think that'd be fun. Fun to see the weird looks I'd get too. Answer: Originally Posted by MJ_Avalanche On a side note, I'd love to do a truly progressive worship set sometime in my life. The worship set would last an hour or so, with just 6 songs! Answer: Originally Posted by cess4jesus i think that's it, thanks but could i have a follow-up question, How is the words of songs/theme progress? Well, maybe something like this. It makes sense to me to start with God, as it were, so... God is holy-- Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty In the light of God's holiness, our own sin is made plain-- God, Be Merciful to Me Despite our sin, God is loving-- How Deep the Father's Love For Us In his love, God gave Jesus to free us from our sin-- Arise, My Soul, Arise Having been made new creations in Christ, God calls us to live new lives-- Lord, Reign in Me Answer: Originally Posted by gtrdave It could mean that at any moment they're liable to kick into a Dream Theater, ELP, Neal Morse, or early Kansas tune. that's complicated! could you site sample songs that could be liable to kick into a dream theater? Personally i'd love to play a Thrice song in a worship set sometime. something like "Like Moths to Flame" or "Image of the Invisible" Answer: Originally Posted by bobthecockroach My best guess is that it means, "Don't play all those old boring hymns. Oh man.........the issues we just went thru in our church over this.......I thought I was going to either quit the music team, or get asked to leave because I liked "the boring old hymns" and I thought it was wrong to just throw them out because kids don't like them. Answer: our church rocks out to progressive songs errday! im the 'worship leader'..and i've only been a christian for about 3 years. maybe thats why my worship song tastes are more.."progressive" Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
