Interviewing a worship director
Question: Have any of you interviewed a potential worship director, or been interviewed? What was it like? It was so easy, and the questions that were asked of me (it was just the senior minister) were so easy to answer, looking back makes me laugh about it. The second time (which is where I'm at now) was much, much harder. It started out with a written questionnaire, and then a video conference interview with the worship minister search team (comprised of worship team members). After that, I was flown to Ohio for an "audition" and then another interview with the worship minister search team. Then I had a one-on-one interview with the senior minister, and then another interview with the senior minister and one of the leadership team members. When I got back home, I had to wait for a couple of weeks, because there was another candidate. Then it was on to a couple more interviews, and finally, right before I was hired, I had to answer some questions about some lies that the former senior minister I worked for told the senior minister I work for now. That was fun. So, I've seen both sides of the spectrum, I believe. Answer: I've been interviewed a couple times, both for my former church home in Cali as well as my current church in Delaware. The church in Cali was a Nazarene church and so the interview and hiring process is by board/commitee though the pastor and I had met and were friends before I was hired on-staff (I had played there for years as a guest and as a member/layperson servant). It was an interesting interview with some folks asking questions to find out where my heart was from the perspective of my personal testimony and beliefs and others asking some very theologically challenging questions regarding worship that I, unfortunately at that time, was not equipped to answer. My church out here is for all intents and purposes a non-denom and my interview was actually a series of interviews first with the pastor alone and with the pastor and several other staff members in addition to serving on a Saturday night alone and 1 Sunday morning with the team before being hired. The questions asked by both the church staff and by myself ranged from personal and testimonial to theological, relational, future goals, vision, team buliding, mentoring, etc...very thourough to say the least and I was very comfortable through the entire process.
