Melody Tips

Question:
I have always wanted to know if writing a melody for lyrics requires knowledge of scales and stuff.
Is there certain scales that go with different types of music?
I might have other questions, but I can't think of them right now.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Matthew
Answer:
I usually don't think in terms of scales when I'm coming up with a melody. Usually while I'm playing the song I'll start singing "Da's" until I come up with one I like.

Occasionally, I'll just come up with a melody by itself, too. And sometimes the lyrics inspire the melody.
You can do it a lot of different ways. And you don't need any knowledge of scales or theory.
Answer:
Knowing about scales does help, though, if you're stuck on where to go. Most certainly you don't want random chords.
But listen to a lot of music in the genre you want to write melodies for. Hopefully, it'll sink in and you'll get a feel for it.
