How Do you play Ska Style????

Question:
I've heard it Ska guitars a lot of times but I cant play it myself.
Please Help...
Answer:
Ok, this is going to sound completely unhelpful but it's the only way I can really put it. Play it how it sounds.
Answer:
Is there any muting involed or is it just flat hithithithit?
Answer:
Mute on the downbeats, strum on the upbeats. Small chords on the top 3 or 4 strings usually sound the best.
Answer:
thank you man ill work wid it.
Answer:
From what I percieve to be the "correct" method...
Using all barre chords, use left hand muting to achieve the right sound. Muting chords with the left hand simply entails that you press down when you want notes to sound and let go when you want muting. In modern ska, the most applied usage of this is to hit the strings in an eighth note pattern (1+2+3+4+), depressing the strings only on the upbeats (also the upstrokes, so you're really only usually hitting the top strings).
This technique is used a lot in funk, jazz, reggae, and rock in general as well.

http://www.cyberfret.com/styles/ska/101/index.php read that, it's a great walkthrough of ska guitar... but the simplest way you can put it is SYNCOPATION or the stressing up the Upbeats, they generally use a set of chords that are higher pitched and played on the top 3 strings really high on the neck, think a typical 232 'D' pattern and move it up and down the neck, there are variations and other chords but it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.. also either a hollow body or a single coil style guitar is best for the style, i'm not sure why, but ska seems to sound great coming from a gretsch or a fender..
Answer:
I play alot of ska, and what I do is yeah, play on the ands od like 1+2+3+4+, exept on the choruses if I use distortion. For the chords, I use the top 3 strings like for example
C chord A chord
E|---3--------5-----|
B|---5--------5-----|
G|---5--------6-----|
D|------------------|
A|------------------|
E|------------------|
Hope that helps
Answer:
By top string you talking about the low or high strings?
Answer:
They're talking about the high strings. With ska, it's all about the fast-reggae beat. Which means mostly upstrokes, muting the chord with the left hand on the downstrokes. Learn your chord inversions and you'll be set.
Answer:
Guys forgive me of my ignorace but how does SKA sounds? what songs does this technique being applied?
Answer:
It's not pure ska (more skacore or whatever) but Catch 22's first album Keasbey Nights (or Knights? I forgot) has a lot of that skanking top strings up beat rhythm guitar on it.

If you prefer Christian artists, then Five Iron Frenzy and the O.C. Supertones were the two big Christian ska bands back in the ska revival heyday.

Thanks Rainer, I guess I now have a pretty good idea of how ska sounds. :)
