80's Rock Style
Question: Hey guys! What makes 80's rock 80's rock? Specific chord progressions or what? Espescially the solo's are a trademark, what makes the different? I just love 80's rock like Stryper and Micheal Sweet and Petra. Want to adopt it into my style repetoir. Thanx Blessings Answer: Suck in the cheddar until you ooze cheesy. It's not so much progressions that make a style as the general sound used. Good use of synthesizers combined with guitars with a good helping of effects, simple 4/4 grooves. It could help to just stop and listen to a bunch of 80's style rock, and write out a list of what you hear. Answer: and grow hair. lots of hair. Answer: the hair helps, for soloing jsut move your fingers as fast as you can on a pentatonic scale... lots of distortion... i mean MEGA amounts of distortion.... you'll want an octavier and a wah (the wah is mainly left with tows end down as to boost the trebel)... on your amp, turn the mid all the way down to the lowest setting... trun your highs and lows all the way up... yeah... and sing with a voice that makes you say "was that dude castrated as a child?" Answer: ok except the "fashion", what scales would be generally used, favorite phrases, etc... . Any good examples of non-evil 80's bands other than the above-mentioned? Thanx guys Answer: 1/8th note chug-chug rhythms (example: chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug) flat 5th power chords 1/8th note chug with quick triplet jiggida rhythms (example: chug-chug-chug-jiggida-chug-chug-jiggida-jiggida-chug) Marshall heads and way more 4x12 cabinets than any human possibly needs 1/8th note chug with 1/16th note jigga rhythms (example: chug-jigga-chug-jigga-chug-jigga-chug-jigga-chug) Hair and hair spray and lots of it Answer: “Eighties music” as a musical style generally means stuff like Simple Minds “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” Robert Palmer “Addicted To Love,” Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” The Police “Every Breath You Take,” Duran Duran “Hungry Like A Wolf.” Yeah, there was a lot of chug-chug-chug going on. Keep in mind that during the 80s there was also music of lasting value like U2, Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson. That's a damn fine pop song, I think. Answer: EBYT indeed has lasting value for me -- I play it as a warm up exercise to stretch out my fingers. Answer: The Police, Duran Duran, and Tears for Fears aren't of value? Aren't there a lot of key-changes (modulation) during the songs? Which keys are the best to modulate to if for ex. i'm in Em? As far as 80's rock techniques, it involves a lot of artificial harmonics, healthy use of wammy bar, tapping, and a good dose of midrange. Speedy alternate picking and some legato as well. When I think of 80's rock, I think of Van Halen. They're about the quintensential 80's rock band, I think.
