Hardcore Screamo Christian Music
Question: OK I have a question. My parents dont want me to listen to music like demon hunter, emery, disiple, dizmas or any other band with screaming in it. Now they are like...how is it christian if they are doing all the screaming and screaming like that is considered demonic and all this other kind of stuff, and i can understand where they are comming from because i didnt use to fancy it either but i've grown more into it. And me and my mom got into a debate in how i wasnt brought up listening to that kind of music so i shouldnt have an excuse to listen to them, and its for bringing people out of it, and not getting more into it. It not like im going to listen to secular music like that. And again I respect there opinions and I respect my parents, but I'm not to keen on giving up my choice in music. What do I do? EDIT::?? OK I have to edit this lol, mostly because of sean's comment. I was also looking for answers on the theory of: Why are some people so biased towards this kind of music, any style of music, just because it doesnt "fit" there lifestyle or "fit" with how they behave, or just because they dont like it? Answer: This thread doesn't belong in this forum. In fact I'm baffled as to what would have led you to put it here. Originally Posted by electrikkdreamz OK I have a question. Respect their decision and rules, but you can try to respectfully reason with them and ask them to explain their position. Anway, I'll give you my responses to the arguments you mentioned. Originally Posted by Argument #1 how is it christian if they are doing all the screaming and screaming like that is considered demonic and all this other kind of stuff 1) Screaming isn't demonic. There is nothing at all demonic about screaming and really aren't any ties between screaming and the satanism or anything demonic. 2) Even if there were ties between screaming and the demonic, screaming is something that God gave us the ability to do. It didn't come from Satan or demons. God made us that way. Therefore, if satanists or members of the occult have hijacked a creation of God and tied it to the demonic, as Christians we should reclaim that creation of God and use it once again for God's glory. Originally Posted by Argument #2 i can understand where they are comming from because i didnt use to fancy it either but i've grown more into it. There is a world of difference between not fancying something and declaring it unChristian or demonic. If truly know where they were coming from and you believed the music was demonic but it grew on you, then there is problem there. Things you believe are demonic shouldn't grow on you. However, if you simply didn't like it, then you really don't know where they were coming from. Their belief it is demonic is based on faulty presuppositions regarding music, screaming and the Christians responses to changes in art. The issue isn't merely about taste. Originally Posted by Argument #3 i wasnt brought up listening to that kind of music so i shouldnt have an excuse to listen to them Your upbringing has nothing to do with whether something is right or wrong. At the heart of the matter is whether "screaming" is a valid artform for Christians. Simply saying that you didn't use to listen to it doesn't respond to the issue at hand. If your parents have actually refered to certain music as demonic (even if its by Christians) then they are making a very dangerous and bold accusation towards other Christians. They need to be able to give a better explanation than refering to the fact you didn't grow up listening to that kind of music. Originally Posted by Argument #4 its for bringing people out of it, and not getting more into it. This assumes that this form of music IS inherently sinful and therefore is something you must get out of. If she proves that this form of music is sinful then this argument holds. However, she will have a hard time proving that screaming is in and of itself demonic. With all this said, when talking to your parents you absolutely must show them the utmost respect. Regardless of whether their decision is reasonable or not, you must abide by their rules and decisions. Answer: I can't say that i'm living Godly, but its not because of the music i listen to. I listen to alot of heavy stuff, alot heavier than demon hunter. You need to show your mom the lyrics of some of the bands. See what they are singing about. It makes me so angry when people judge by the way people sing. Ask your mom why those nice slow hymns are so much better, they all have the same meaning. Metalcore or hardcore bands often sing of struggles they go through, whats wrong with that? I shouldn't be talking because my life right now if drifted away, and i'm sure if i let people know they would say its becuase of the music i listen to. If your one thats watches movies, i'm sure you've watched movies with sex, swearing and violence in them before, why is that better than listening to bands that scream? If you parents have watched movies like that then ask them, you'll have them in a spot. I agree with this arguement, but you have to be careful that you're not acting the same way your parents are...trying to push something on them. This could either end up getting your parents to let you listen to music with screaming or get them to take away all your movies lol. I'm on your side with this, just be respectful and give it time. Keep in your mind that your parents are only trying to look out for you, you just have to show them that this is an area where they are misinformed. Answer: Thanks To Sean: Honestly I'm not sure either, but I think i was thinking this was about a theory, and though I was asking for advice. I wanted a opinion to on this as a theory, why people seem to think that just because a genre (especially hardcore rock) sings a specific way or does a specific thing makes them bad. Just like at my old church there was controversy about playing rap music for one of the services, the older generation thought it was the devil's music, while the younger generation did not. Same as with this, the older generation (my parents) think this music is the devil's music, (in my opinion, all music was from God, and people twist stuff though, there really is no music that hasnt been influenced by the devil or satan or people with that sort of mind set, except for christian music), and the younger generation (me and my brother) does not. Because for me that kind of music, tells what I'm going through In my life spiritually and physically, now I cant tell them that because then they'll think I'm a suicidic depressed teenager (some of my writtings could prove that aha), and shows God's grace through it. Now I could show them some hardcore screamo christian music..but i dont think that would help my situation much lol. But the advice is appreciated much, and I'm going to do my studying and hold a debate between myself and my parents about this. And I've tryed to show them but there like, so what is this supposed to mean, and I have to EXPLAIN the christia meaning behind the lyrics, which gets heated sometimes, because then they are like why does the message have to be so hidden and why isnt it obvious, you should have to look that hard for a christian message. and then I try to explain again how it's used to help people come to christ, and sometimes songs with christ everywhere annoyes some people. Haha I dont have ANY movies like those, ive usually saw movies like that at a friends house or the movies, never here. Its uncomfortable for me to see stuff like that around my parents. Plus I'm not a movie person...more a music person, so thats why I'm upset about them judging it the way they are doing. Yea I definatly dont wanna push them, cause the result is often tragic, thats why i mentioned i would stage a debate, that way any arrogances or anything like that wont be taken seriously. (Thank God for public speaking and Debate class ) And I know that they are looking out for my best, but sometimes its just too much...they simply dont understand :\ Thanks again for your input bree Answer: Originally Posted by electrikkdreamz Thanks To Sean: Honestly I'm not sure either, but I think i was thinking this was about a theory, and though I was asking for advice. Answer: Whoooosh. Answer: Get some lyrics that are strait out. Like this one for instance. ZAO is death metal, and look at some of their lyrics, they are so strait out. Show them something like that. Answer: the problem is really this, parents have come to associate screaming with death metal and death metal to demonice (ie Slayer). Show them how openly cchristian some screamo bands are, watch the UnderOATh DVD, they pray like 5 times. And they arent even teh most christian band. Show them something like that. Actually Zao would be a bad example since they havent been a Christian band since the original incarnation of Zao.Zao neither claims not wants the title of being a Christian band now.And they are more metalcore/blackmetal.Death metal would be something like Becoming the Archetype which would be a good band to show parents.Or The Showdown death metal/metalcore with a touch of Southern Rock. Answer: Originally Posted by earlessdog You need to show your mom the lyrics of some of the bands. See what they are singing about. The problem with this is that most screamo lyrics are completely incomprehensible, even on paper. Answer: Let them listen to Living Sacrifice's last song on "Conceived in fire." Its called "Reach for the Sky" and there is an excellent (and very understandable) monologue in the middle of that song, after the growling. This might offer some new perspective. Answer: you mentioned Emery...I saw them in concert recently and they mentioned their faith a few times...I have read numerous interviews in which Toby(the lead singer) talkes about love and the root of love being God...then also in Listening To Freddie Mercury He addresses Christianity quite specifically lyricsI don't know if that helps any...but yeah...look through different band's lyrics and you'll turn up some stuff Answer: Originally Posted by mulletman there is an excellent (and very understandable) monologue in the middle of that song, after the growling. *has one eyebrow raised* You think having them listen to a bunch of growling is going to help? Better to go with a lyric sheet or something. Answer: No Innocent Victim is a good band lyrically. Screamo I do not enjoy for the most part. Not my thing, metal or old hardcore is more my thing.
