The best way to tune it down to d is like this. You know how if you place the 5 fret on the E that it will be the same as the A string. Now just tune the 7 fret on e string to match the a string

I just use the open third string or my tu-2

Yeah, I find the open D-string easiest to use.

if you have a tuner:
-lower the pitch of the low E string just a bit
-play the harmonic at the 12th fret
-the tuner should think that its the D string
