Song Selections - Week of May 29, 2005
Question: We will be blessed with the teaching of Neil Anderson this Sunday. He came several years ago and led our church through a corporate repentence. I think he's simply teaching this time round. Prelude: Instrumental: Meet With Me Welcome, Intro Service, Get Connected & Prayer Meet With Me In the Presence of a Holy God Breathe Release Children Let’s Talk: Summer Ministries Pastoral Prayer/Offering Revive Us Again Hungry Word: Setting Your Church Free (Neil Anderson) I Bow My Knee Let Your Glory Fall / Today (Depending on message direction) Next Event Benevolent Offering Today Everlasting Dismissal Answer: Wednesday May 25 Youth Having a sort of "concert" that night, so the service is primarily music. ~First Half~ Unite (Supertones) - Db You're Powerful (Skillet) - D modal mixture Glory Defined (Building 429) - Db Savior (Skillet) - D minor ~Charge and Challenge to Graduates~ ~Second Half~ For the Moments I Feel Faint (Relient K) - E Lift it (TFK) - G I So Hate Consequences (Relient K) - Db Welcome Home (Supertones) - D Still don't know about Sunday. Y'all like doing crazy-distant (harmonically; obviously not distant melodically, seeing as there's only a half-step between them all) keys, don't you?? Wow. That's crazy. Haha. That's crazy. Haha. Think that's bad? I'm gonna have to use three different guitars because of all the alternate tunings, PLUS play acoustic on one of the tunes, and then jump on piano halfway through another one the the tunes. It doesn't matter to me though, because it's better than what we were doing (every song is in B or E). I think our only problem is that we're doing such a melting pot of music by different artists that it can't help but float all over the place. Also helps that I'm the only one who would even care that the songs are so different harmonically. Answer: Originally Posted by MJ_Avalanche Think that's bad? Have fun. If you played piano instead of guitar, it would be easier for you to switch between keys. Just food for thought. Maybe it's because my voice is craptastic and I need to get myself firmly set into a key before I really feel that I can sing well at all... otherwise my pitch is all over the place. Also helps that I'm the only one who would even care that the songs are so different harmonically. Answer: Originally Posted by Nate Haha. Have fun. I could play everything in C. Hmmm... I actually like doing every song in a service in the same key. Yeah, I would like to gravitate towards that route anyways because it makes everything much easier in the end, but we currently don't have enough material yet to be able to do that. I also have to advantage (or disadvantage, if you will) of not having to sing, so therefore, while that's in the back of my mind, I'm primarily thinking instrumentally. Come to think of it, not only would I be the only who would care, but it'd also be the only one who would notice the difference. I think the funny part is, though, they're not really that different from each other. I could easily do the Db stuff in D and be done with it, but I like the original keys. Answer: Originally Posted by MJ_Avalanche Heh, I assume you mean the ever popular transpose button? Hehe... That would be fun. I could play everything in C. No, I mean the fact that piano is one of the most versatile instruments, harmonically speaking. Nearly every other instrument is built in such a way as to clearly favor certain keys over others. Woodwinds and brass favor flat keys (concert pitch), stringed instruments favor sharp keys, but piano doesn't really favor any particular set of keys. Sure, it's easier to play keys with very few sharps and flats, but it's still possible (and not much of a stretch or change) to play in all the other keys. On winds, brass, and strings, there are some keys that are ridiculously more difficult than others, and some keys are even next-to-impossible on certain instruments. Come to think of it, not only would I be the only who would care, but it'd also be the only one who would notice the difference. Sometimes, even in equal temperament, there is just something about a particular key that makes it sound like a better fit for a song. I'd love to research that all someday. I've heard it's one of the things that the infamous "Learn Perfect Pitch In A Month" programs rely on. In His love, Nate Answer: This weekend is Youth Sunday. Yay! I mean, I respect his work and all, but I just never thought that he was really that great of a songwriter. There are a few tunes of his that I like, but I think most of them are merely mediocre. Oh well, to each his own, I guess. I do like his guitarist's sound on the songs, though. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
