Question:
We FINALLY got our amp on tuesday and installed it wednesday, so we had monitors for the first time in 4 months. It was a beautiful night.

Before, we were using some piece o' crap 10 year old hot-spots. Then they died. And we never got around to ordering an amp so we could use wedges. But dang that was good to hear myself clearly again.

I just wanted to share that. We got Eurosound something or another. Haha. And we use our new beautiful Mackie wedges.

I didn't realize how hard it was to lead worship without a monitor. 'Twas helpful.

Anyone else ever had any problems like this?

There's always the other extreme of the monitor problem, where everybody has a monitor and the total volume of the monitors meets or exceeds the mains once everyone has put in their suggestions for what type of mix they want to hear and how loud they want it to be.
Monitors are a blessing, and too many of them with too many mix possibilities can be a curse. I've lived in both houses before, and I'm not sure which one is nicer.

I agree with Nate, monitors are a neccesary evil. In our church we have a stone wall behind the stage. So of course all the sound coming from the 8 monitors we have up there just bounce right off the wall and shoot out into the audience. It makes for a very muddy, nasty mix. Even though the volume isn't very loud, the sound still relects off of the wall. Very frustrating!

Monitors really don't need to be as loud as they often get pumped. People sometimes need to get out of the rock star mentallity of "turn everything louder", and start turning things down instead of turning things up.
I think the best monitor mix I ever had was one of my quietest ones.

It can be difficult when you stand next to a drummer and a piano - two instruments which are loud without any amplification - then you kind of have to turn the monitors up a bit.
Our monitors tend to be louder than they should be because we only have two monitors trying to accommodate 7 people on a rather large platform. Proper number and setup of monitors would definately be helpful as well.
