Singing with guitar/keyboard
Question: This question is for any singers who have sang while playing guitar or keyboard: I'm new at singing, I have only been doing it for a couple of months. My main instrument is the keyboard but I can pick up a guitar and do the easy chord songs on there. I noticed my voice comes out a lot better while accompanied by a guitar than with a keyboard. Anyone else here notice if their voice sounds better with any particular instrument? Answer: Mine sounds better with bagpipes. Answer: What do you mean "sounds better?" Are you talking strictly about timbre / tone quality here, or actual pitch accuracy? In His love, Nate Answer: Timbre/tone quality Answer: Maybe you just relax more singing with a guitar, and so your voice sounds more natural. Answer: It's probably because when you have an instrument, you feel more comfortable singing at louder levels (i.e., you're not so afraid to let air out), and when you let more air out...it sounds better. ...plus, it might just help you get "into" the music... Answer: i sing and play guitar. i think i sing well with either piano or guitar...i think i prefer to be in control of the music, though. lol that is why i am more comfortable playing and singing, i guess. Answer: Well, I've been playing guitar longer than keys, so I have to say I'm more comfortable singing with the guitar strictly because I can chord better and don't have to look down as much. If I ever played the keys while singing, I'd be looking down at the keys the whole time. Answer: I think I sound better when I sing without an instrument. When I'm playing, it's a divided attention exercise, and I'm just better able to focus when I just sing. That said, I love to play my guitar, and would rather sacrifice the voice quality to be able to sing and play at the same time. I don't think God cares about voice quality that much anyhow. Answer: Bet you stand playing guitar & sit playing piano............ Answer: Originally Posted by Jeffkeyboard ...Anyone else here notice if their voice sounds better with any particular instrument? Hi Jeff... Sure. My favorite two guitars for singing with are acoustic, and when I'm singing I consider the guitar an equal voice to my own. I play both keys and guitar, but only lead with guitar. If instruments are 'tools' then they are optional and dispensable, but if they are 'voices' then they are integral to worship. Psalms 150 lists all the instruments with which we are to praise the Lord and concludes with the phrase ''Let everything which has breath praise the Lord.'' No singing was listed, only instruments, so I conclude it is we who give them breath, so they are voices of worship. Answer: i actually lead praise with a bass. i know this is a little unusual, but our youth group's praise team situation is unusual (HINT: none of the praise team members can sing at ALL so they have to use an average singer at best like me :P). it's a little hard sometimes to concentrate on both aspects, and an older worship leader/missionary advised me to take up acoustic instead or leave the lead-singing duties to someone else. when i played, i would just hover on root notes and play it over and over and over and over again, making every song sound the same. however, in recent days, i've been growing used to doing both, and i'm now at the point where i'm capable of maintaining the singing and adding in a few riffs and things like that while still being comfortable. and i have a lower voice anyways, so i think it works in its own unique little way. Answer: I can sing when I'm playing guitar, but couldn't carry a tune in a bucket when I'm playing bass!!! Answer: i play keys (standing up) and sing, and i noticed a big difference in the way i sing when playing an instrument (just as long as we're not doing anything too syncopated!) Playing bass, it depends, because bass is my second instrument i have to think a little bit more when i sing and play. Answer: I'd have to agree with Georgeo. When you are singing and accompanying yourself with an instrument, you begin to worry a bit less about you voice and a bit more on your instrument. This allows you to sing more naturally and it also gives you a personal reference point for your pitch control. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
